Dollar Index tops 100 as Fed tightening bets lift greenback; euro and sterling slide

The US Dollar extended a Tuesday rebound, taking the US Dollar Index above the 100.00 threshold and to fresh two-month highs as expectations of further Fed tightening underpinned the move, while a potential deal linked to the US-Iran-Hormuz conflict drew little attention. Attention on Wednesday, September 23 turns to preliminary S&P Global Manufacturing and Services PMIs, alongside weekly MBA Mortgage Applications, the EIA report on US crude oil inventories and remarks from the Fed’s Barr, with US Treasury yields mixed across the curve.

The euro slid further, pushing EUR/USD to new multi-week lows near 1.1430 ahead of September flash S&P Global PMIs and speeches by the ECB’s Vujcic and Lane. Sterling fell to around 1.3320, a late-July level, with the UK also awaiting the same PMI set. USD/JPY rose for a third straight session above 157.00, with Japan’s advanced S&P Global PMIs due on September 24, while AUD/USD dipped below 0.7100 to three-day lows, with Australia’s preliminary PMIs next. In commodities, front-month WTI dropped through $90.00 a barrel to three-week lows on hopes of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, while gold edged higher but stayed under $4,400 per troy ounce.

Trading Strategies On US Dollar, European Majors, And Yen

We believe derivative traders should position for continued US Dollar dominance in the coming weeks as the US Dollar Index (DXY) pushes past the 100.00 threshold. This rally is backed by solid economic fundamentals, including resilient US GDP growth of 2.5% and a stable 4.2% unemployment rate, which keep expectations for Fed policy hawkish. We recommend buying short-term call options on the DXY or structuring long USD-centric trades to capture this upward momentum.

With EUR/USD slipping toward 1.1430 and GBP/USD retreating to late-July lows near 1.3320, we advise traders to build bearish exposure on European majors. Utilizing put options on the Euro with a strike price near 1.1350 allows us to hedge against weaker-than-expected flash PMIs across the Eurozone. For Sterling, short-dated bear put spreads are highly effective right now to exploit the widening policy divergence between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England.

As USD/JPY breaks above 157.00, we see a prime opportunity to utilize knock-out call options to capture upside while protecting against sudden Bank of Japan interventions. Historical data shows that the BoJ typically tolerates rapid moves up to a point, but volatility spikes near 160.00 make structured barriers essential. Staying long on USD/JPY via these capped risk profiles allows us to benefit from the yield differential without taking on catastrophic tail risk.

Derivative Opportunities In Energy And Gold

In the energy sector, front-month WTI crude’s drop below $90.00 per barrel suggests a major shift, especially as hopes of a deal to unlock the Strait of Hormuz ease supply fears. We suggest taking advantage of this downward trend by buying put options on WTI crude or setting up bear call spreads. Recent inventory data, which showed a surprise build in US crude stockpiles of over 2 million barrels, further supports this bearish outlook for the weeks ahead.

Even though gold is holding its ground just under the $4,400 per ounce mark, the combination of a stronger dollar and mixed Treasury yields suggests a consolidation phase is coming. We recommend implementing iron condors or range-bound option strategies to collect premium while the metal digests its massive year-to-date gains. Historically, gold tends to trade sideways during periods of active Fed rate speculation, making premium-selling strategies highly profitable right now.
