Bitcoin nears $86,000 as Fed hike lifts risk appetite; gold tests $4,321 support

Bitcoin traded near $86,000 on Monday as the broader crypto market firmed, extending an advance that has been in place since 16 September. Price action is pressing towards resistance in the $88,000–$90,000 area, helped by buoyant risk appetite after the Federal Reserve tightened policy by 25 basis points last Wednesday as it works to return US inflation to 2%. The crypto Fear & Greed Index stood at 70, up from 57 last week, while technical gauges show stretched momentum, with the RSI around 73 and MACD positive. Support levels are watched at $84,000 and $80,000, with a wider cushion from the 50-day, 100-day and 200-day EMAs clustered between roughly $72,300 and $75,000; SuperTrend support is near $75,974.

Gold remained under pressure, with XAU/USD around $4,340 and capped by the 50-day EMA at $4,344 and the 100-day EMA at $4,362. The 200-day EMA at $4,321 sits just below spot, while overhead constraints include a descending trendline near $4,506 and a SuperTrend level at $4,591. Momentum readings were subdued, with the RSI around 48 and MACD negative, leaving the $4,321 area as the immediate downside line to monitor.

Trading Strategies for Bitcoin and Gold

We recommend that derivative traders prepare for increased volatility by focusing on buying opportunities during minor pullbacks rather than chasing the current rally near $86,000. Because the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is sitting in overbought territory at 73, any immediate push toward the $88,000 to $90,000 range could face quick profit-taking. Leveraging options, such as bull call spreads, allows us to capitalize on this upward momentum while strictly defining our risk against sudden drops.

Our bullish outlook for the coming weeks is highly supported by historical data, which shows October is traditionally one of Bitcoin’s best-performing months. According to historical crypto market statistics, Bitcoin has closed October with positive returns over 80% of the time since 2013, averaging a substantial gain of roughly 20% during this period. This seasonal pattern, combined with the Crypto Fear & Greed Index surging to 70, suggests a strong tailwind as we head into next month.

For precious metals, we should adopt a cautious “wait-and-see” approach near the key support level of $4,321. Since gold is currently trading below its 50-day and 100-day moving averages, a breakdown past this 200-day average could trigger heavy short-selling. Conversely, if this structural floor holds, it presents a low-risk entry point to buy call options in anticipation of a rebound.

Macroeconomic Factors and Market Sentiment

The Federal Reserve’s recent 25 basis point rate hike highlights persistent inflation fears, which are keeping investors on high alert. Historically, gold ETF flows and trading volumes tend to stabilize when geopolitical tensions persist, even under tighter monetary policy. We should monitor these macroeconomic shifts closely as they will dictate capital flows between traditional safe havens and digital assets.
