Australian Dollar slips after RBA hike; NZD/USD breaks 0.5650 as markets eye RBNZ tightening

Australia’s fourth rate rise of 2026 pushed the Australian Dollar lower, while NZD/USD closed below 0.5650 for the first time in the current slide. The Reserve Bank of Australia lifted the cash rate to 4.60%, its highest since 2011, via a unanimous vote, but its statement pointed to a slowing economy. Futures had priced a cash rate above 5% by May 2027 before the meeting, yet Governor Bullock indicated less follow-up tightening. In New Zealand, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand raised the Official Cash Rate to 2.75% on 2 September for a second straight hike; after that meeting, odds of an October move fell to about 36% from 65%, even as the RBNZ track pencilled in a pause then and 3.00% in December. Those odds have since rebounded to about 80% for a 3.00% rise on 28 October.

The OCR is 1.85 points below Australia’s cash rate and one point under the low end of the Fed’s range, while the RBNZ’s neutral rate is put at 3% to 3.5%. Markets also face August building permits on Wednesday at 21:45 GMT after a 4.3% July drop, and the ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence index on Thursday at 21:00 GMT, last at 98; US spending and inflation data on Wednesday and payrolls on Friday are expected to dominate, ahead of the RBA’s 3 November decision. Technically, resistance is 0.5650 and then 0.5700, with support near 0.5625 and 0.5600; the bias remains short while 0.5700 caps, targeting 0.5600 then 0.5550, with daily Stoch RSI in single digits since mid-September and a daily close above 0.5700 ending the short.

NZD/USD Short Bias and Target Levels

We suggest derivative traders maintain a short bias on the NZD/USD pair in the coming weeks, targeting the 0.5600 level and potentially 0.5550. This downside target is highly credible as 0.5550 aligns closely with the multi-year lows of 0.5512 seen during the global economic slowdown of late 2022. We advise keeping a close eye on the 0.5700 resistance mark, as a daily close above this level would invalidate this short setup.

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s recent decision to lift its cash rate to 4.60% has signaling implications that we believe will continue to weigh on regional sentiment. Since Australia’s economy is showing visible signs of a slowdown, this policy move looks like a rate hike without a sequel. We expect this lack of future tightening to cap any potential rallies in the Australian Dollar and drag the Kiwi down with it.

Regional and Global Headwinds Remain For The Kiwi

With the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s next decision on October 28, we recommend pricing in a highly cautious 25-basis-point hike to 3.00%. Although Brent crude oil prices fluctuating near $80 a barrel keep near-term inflation risks elevated, the Kiwi is unlikely to find sustained support. We suggest trading any temporary Kiwi spikes as selling opportunities, as the rate will only sit at the very bottom of the RBNZ’s neutral range.

We must also consider the broader macroeconomic backdrop, particularly China’s cooling economy, which is currently projected to grow at a modest pace of around 4.5% in 2026. Because China purchases over 30% of New Zealand’s agricultural and dairy exports, any further Chinese slowdown directly dampens the demand for Kiwi commodity goods. Derivative traders should use this fundamental weakness to justify holding put options on the NZD.

Finally, we advise traders to prepare for heightened volatility around this Friday’s US nonfarm payrolls and upcoming consumer spending data. Historically, major US labor market surprises have triggered rapid shifts of over 100 pips in the NZD/USD pair within a single trading session. We recommend using tight stop-loss orders just above the 0.5650 level to protect short positions against sudden US dollar fluctuations.
