Global markets turn defensive as tech slides, Brent hovers near $110 and France-UK risks mount

Global markets opened the week still processing a sharp US equity sell-off, as money rotated towards Swiss and UK indices while technology shares weakened. Sovereign bonds, led by US Treasuries, rallied as a defensive bid re-emerged, and crude added to the risk backdrop after Brent ended the week just below $110 a barrel following attacks on Russian energy infrastructure and further escalation in the Middle East. In the UK, attention is turning to next week’s Budget. Weekend messaging from the Treasury was limited after reports of a possible bank profit surcharge of up to 8%. Bank shares slipped on Friday, though moves were contained, with NatWest and Lloyds down 1% each. Gilts remained steady; 10-year yields are 5bps lower so far in October.

France has re-entered focus after weekend unrest, with traders watching the French–German sovereign spread, already over 135bps, and some positioning for a move towards 150bp as fiscal tightening plans collide with rising social pressure. The euro was slightly weaker against the dollar last week and started this week below $1.12. In the US, earnings season continues with Netflix, Meta and Tesla in view, as markets weigh results against renewed AI volatility. The Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 12% last week and Korea’s Kospi dropped 16%, while Meta slipped 2% versus a 25% fall for CoreWeave and 20% for SanDisk. Separately, the Nasdaq 100 fell through its 50-day SMA and broke below a multi-month trend line.

Market Outlook And Defensive Positioning

We should prepare for continued market swings as US equities face pressure while energy markets remain on edge. With Brent crude hovering near $110 per barrel amid geopolitical shocks, historical spikes above $100 have typically driven up headline inflation by 0.5% to 1.0% in subsequent quarters. We can hedge risk-on tech exposure by allocating toward defensive safe havens like sovereign bonds or broad energy futures.

Following last week’s sharp pullback where the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 12% and the Nasdaq 100 broke its 50-day moving average, we see short-term downside risks for chip makers. Historically, when the Nasdaq breaks below key trendlines alongside sharp drops in semiconductor benchmarks, indices experience an average additional drawdown of 3% to 5% before finding a baseline. We advise watching upcoming earnings from hyperscalers like Meta and Tesla, using options strategies to manage earnings-related volatility or position for a potential rebound in beaten-down chip stock valuations.

European Yield Spreads And UK Market Risks

In European debt and currency markets, social unrest in France is pushing the 10-year French-German yield spread toward 150 basis points, well above its multi-year average of 50 to 60 basis points. We should watch for further euro weakness below $1.12, especially as political fragmentation threatens upcoming fiscal tightening plans. We can capitalize on this widening yield differential by shorting European currency pairs against the US dollar or taking relative-value positions in sovereign debt futures.

With the UK Budget approaching next week, we suggest maintaining caution around UK banking equities despite recent relative strength in the FTSE 100. Rumors of an 8% profit surcharge tax on domestic banks could trigger temporary sell-offs, even though 10-year Gilt yields have managed to decline by 5 basis points so far this month. We can look to trade short-term pullbacks in UK bank stocks while keeping tight risk limits ahead of official fiscal announcements.
