Gold holds below $4,150 as softer dollar offsets hot US CPI and Middle East risks

Gold traded below $4,150 after failing to extend an Asian-session rise, though it snapped a three-day losing run as the US Dollar softened on falling Treasury yields. Wednesday’s hotter CPI initially boosted rate-hike expectations, but the move faded as markets judged the Federal Reserve was unlikely to act immediately, supporting non-yielding bullion even as broader price pressures kept policy uncertainty elevated.

The BLS said headline CPI rose to 3.7% year on year from 3.4%, while core CPI increased to 2.6% from 2.4%, prompting a reassessment of the Fed path. The FXS Speechtracker put Mary Daly at 6.8/10 versus a 6.1/10 historical average, and the FXS Fed Sentiment Index slipped 0.84 points to 128.17. Markets still price over an 85% chance of another hike by year-end, with Middle East risks also in focus after a container ship sank in the Strait of Hormuz following a projectile attack and as the Houthis continued strikes; attention turns to US PPI and a speech by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the IMF and World Bank meetings. Technically, XAU/USD remains capped below the 100-period SMA on the 4-hour chart, with MACD negative, resistance seen near $4,215-$4,220 and support around $4,075-$4,065.

Trading Strategy and Technical Outlook

We should avoid rushing into aggressive bullish derivative positions on gold while it continues to trade below $4,150. Technical indicators show lingering downside pressure, with the 100-period moving average capping price moves near $4,180. Historically, entering long positions when interest rate hike probabilities exceed 85% carries elevated risk, so we must wait for a sustained break above $4,215–$4,220 before targeting further upside.

On the downside, we need to monitor the immediate $4,100 support level very closely. A break below this level opens the door toward the key $4,075–$4,065 demand zone, where the gold price recently bounced from a one-week low. If sellers push price action beneath $4,065, we should pivot toward bearish derivative strategies to capitalize on a fresh breakdown.

Macro and Geopolitical Risk Management

Macroeconomic events will drive major price swings in the coming sessions following the recent jump in US headline inflation from 3.4% to 3.7%. With Producer Price Index data due today and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speaking on Friday, market expectations for monetary policy are shifting rapidly. We can utilize defined-risk options strategies to trade the resulting volatility without exposing our portfolio to unhedged directional risks.

Geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, including drone attacks and shipping disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz, are adding a persistent risk premium to commodities. During similar supply-side shock events, historical volatility metrics show gold option premiums often rise rapidly as traders rush to hedge against tail risks. We should maintain strict stop-losses across all active positions, as competing safe-haven flows between the yellow metal and the US Dollar could generate erratic whipsaws.
