WTI slips below $94 as US weighs shadow fleet sanctions easing amid rising geopolitical risks

WTI fell after five straight sessions of gains, trading around $93.10 a barrel in Asian hours on Thursday, as Washington weighed easing sanctions on “shadow fleet” vessels. A US official said the discussions are aimed at bringing down record-high global freight rates by targeting tankers that have moved crude and refined products from sanctioned producers such as Russia, Iran and Venezuela, following a temporary lifting of restrictions on Russian diesel fuel.

Geopolitical risk continued to frame the market as supply chains faced fresh disruption. A container ship sank in the Strait of Hormuz after a projectile attack, while Iran-backed Houthi forces maintained drone and missile strikes on Saudi Arabia, prompting more oil tankers to avoid established crude-loading zones. Russia also alleged Ukrainian strikes on two refineries, including the 400,000-barrel-per-day Ryazan plant, and said this breached an “energy ceasefire”. On the supply side, the API reported US crude stocks fell by 11.12 million barrels in the week to 9 October versus expectations for a 1.9 million-barrel build, after a 2.1 million-barrel draw previously; API and EIA figures are typically within 1% of each other 75% of the time.

Derivative Trading Outlook Amid Geopolitical and Regulatory Shifts

With West Texas Intermediate pulling back to around $93.10 per barrel, we recommend derivative traders prepare for sharp two-way price action in the coming weeks. While talk of easing shadow fleet sanctions offers brief downside relief, compounding geopolitical risks indicate this price dip may be short-lived. We advise against aggressive short positions while prices hold firmly above key technical floors near $90.

Escalating attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and strikes on major energy infrastructure, such as Russia’s 400,000-barrel-per-day Ryazan refinery, are heavily skewing risks to the upside. Historically, during periods of heightened Middle Eastern conflict, crude oil volatility metrics frequently surge past 35%, making plain long call options expensive. To manage these elevated premiums, we favor utilizing bull call spreads to capture potential rallies toward $98-$100 while keeping risk defined.

Market Metrics, OPEC+ Response, and Trading Strategies

Traders must closely watch official government inventory metrics to validate the massive weekly draw of 11.12 million barrels reported by industry data. Because government inventory figures historically align with industry reports about 75% of the time, a secondary confirmation of this draw could trigger rapid short covering. Historical precedent shows that unexpected domestic crude draws exceeding 10 million barrels often boost front-month futures by 3% to 5% within forty-eight hours.

We also suggest monitoring how OPEC+ responds to these ongoing export disruptions across Saudi Arabia and the broader region. Given that global freight rates remain uncomfortably high and key loading zones are being actively bypassed, physical supply tightness will likely overpower temporary regulatory shifts. Derivative traders should consider keeping position sizes smaller than usual to navigate sudden policy headlines or unexpected military developments.
