USD/CHF Steadies Near May 2025 Levels as Fed-SNB Divergence Sustains Dollar Support

USD/CHF held steady on Friday even as the US Dollar eased after a strong weekly run, leaving the pair around 0.8285, close to levels last seen in May 2025. The cross was still set for a fourth consecutive weekly gain. The Swiss franc has lagged most major currencies this year, helped by a hawkish Federal Reserve backdrop, while the Swiss National Bank’s 0% policy rate has reinforced the currency’s role as a carry-trade funding leg and sustained selling pressure.

The SNB kept policy unchanged on Thursday and said its stance remained appropriate to keep inflation within a price-stability-consistent range while supporting economic development, while also lifting its inflation forecast after higher oil prices pushed inflation up and medium-term pressures rose only slightly. By contrast, the Fed lifted rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4.00%, and projections showed 16 of 18 policymakers expecting at least one more increase this year. The US Dollar Index hovered around 101 after touching 101.40, and the 10-year Treasury yield held near 5.17% after peaking at 5.22%, the highest since 2007; CME FedWatch priced about a 66% chance of an October hike, with PCE inflation, the ISM Manufacturing PMI and NFP due next week.

Derivative Trading Opportunities from Interest Rate Differentials

We believe derivative traders should exploit the widening interest rate differential by purchasing medium-term USD/CHF call options. With the Swiss National Bank keeping its policy rate at 0% and the Federal Reserve holding at 3.75%-4.00%, the franc serves as an ideal funding currency for lucrative carry trades. Historically, during prolonged periods of monetary policy divergence like the mid-2000s, the Swiss franc has experienced sustained multi-month depreciation against the dollar.

Given next week’s crucial US PCE inflation and Nonfarm Payrolls data, we advise traders to utilize bull call spreads to mitigate premium decay. This structure protects our capital against sudden safe-haven spikes in the Swiss franc, which could easily be triggered by deteriorating geopolitical conditions in the Strait of Hormuz. The strategy allows us to capture upside gains if the CME FedWatch Tool’s 66% probability of an October rate hike becomes reality.

Fixed Income Strategies Amid Higher Yield Prospects

In the debt markets, we suggest shorting US Treasury futures or buying put options on long-term bond instruments. The 10-year US Treasury yield is consolidating near 5.17%, and historical patterns show that breaking past the recent 5.22% peak could trigger a rapid run toward levels not seen since the summer of 2007. Positioning for higher yields remains highly favorable as long as Fed officials maintain their hawkish rhetoric ahead of the next policy meeting.
