Chicago Fed activity index edges higher in August, reinforcing soft-landing narrative

The Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) registered -0.04 in August, indicating a modestly negative reading for overall economic activity relative to its historical trend. The index remains below zero, a level typically associated with below-trend growth, but it moved closer to neutral during the month.

The August figure improved from -0.08 previously, marking a small month-on-month uptick in the CFNAI. While the index stayed in negative territory, the narrower shortfall versus the prior reading points to slightly less weakness in the latest data.

Economic Outlook and Derivative Strategy Implications

The latest Chicago Fed National Activity Index rising to -0.04 in August from -0.08 shows that while the U.S. economy is expanding slightly below its historical trend, the downward momentum has stalled. For us as derivative traders, this moderate economic print suggests we are firmly in “soft landing” territory rather than facing an imminent recession. This resilient backdrop reduces the immediate need for aggressive defensive hedging, allowing us to pivot toward yield-generating, range-bound strategies.

With the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) currently trading near the 14 level, option premium sellers stand to benefit from a relatively stable equity market over the coming weeks. We should look to deploy neutral strategies, such as iron condors or short strangles on the S&P 500, to capture decaying option premium. Because the macroeconomic data is neither hot enough to spur inflation fears nor weak enough to trigger recession panic, implied volatility is likely to drift lower.

Interest Rate and Sector Rotation Recommendations

In the interest rate markets, this data supports a highly measured easing path from the Federal Reserve, making aggressive rate-cut bets less attractive. We suggest trimming exposure to deep out-of-the-money interest rate options and instead focusing on range-bound Treasury futures strategies. Historically, when the three-month moving average of the CFNAI remains above -0.70, severe economic downturns are avoided, which should keep the 10-year Treasury yield anchored near its recent 3.75% baseline.

We also recommend adjusting our equity options playbook to account for sector-specific rotation rather than relying on a broad-market lift. Defensive sectors and value stocks often outperform high-beta tech when economic growth is positive but below trend. To exploit this, we favor buying protective collars on high-multiple growth equities while writing covered calls on steady dividend-paying sectors.
