US and Chinese officials opened discussions in New York on Sunday to lay groundwork for potential agreements spanning trade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and critical minerals, ahead of a planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, Bloomberg reported. The talks were held at JPMorgan Chase’s Manhattan headquarters.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, while US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also participated. In markets, AUD/USD was 0.04% lower on the day, trading at 0.7120 at the time of writing.

Market Volatility Expected Amid High-Stakes Trade Talks

We expect significant volatility in the foreign exchange and equity options markets as high-stakes talks unfold in New York this week. Historically, US-China trade negotiations trigger sharp, sudden swings, making short-term straddles on trade-sensitive assets highly attractive. With the AUD/USD currently hovering around a quiet 0.7120, a breakthrough could rapidly push the currency pair toward its previous resistance levels.

Trading Strategies Around AI and Critical Mineral Sectors

We suggest derivative traders focus closely on the AI and critical mineral sectors, which are at the very heart of these negotiations. China’s recent export restrictions on critical tech minerals like antimony, gallium, and germanium have already strained global supply chains and pushed mineral prices up. Taking long call options on major Western mining firms or semiconductor ETFs could yield high returns if the administration secures supply chain concessions on Thursday.

Conversely, we must prepare for the downside if the upcoming meeting between President Trump and President Xi ends in a deadlock. Historical data shows that sudden tariff threats during the previous trade war cycles routinely triggered 3% to 5% drops in global tech indices within days. Buying out-of-the-money protective puts on the Nasdaq or positioning for a stronger greenback via USD/CNH call options remains a highly prudent hedge against a diplomatic stalemate.
