Order type Definition

What Is an Order Type?

An order type describes how a trade instruction should be carried out, based on the price conditions a trader sets. The three most common are market orders, limit orders and stop orders, each suited to a different purpose.

Market, Limit and Stop Orders Compared

A market order executes immediately at the best available price. A limit order only executes at a specified price or better, while a stop order is triggered once the market reaches a particular level, often used to limit losses or enter a position on a breakout.

Choosing the Right Order Type

The right order type depends on what a trader is trying to achieve, whether that’s speed of execution, price certainty, or automating an exit. Many trading platforms also allow combinations, such as a stop-limit order, which only becomes a limit order once a trigger price is reached.

Each Order Type Carries Different Trade-Offs: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, choosing an order type involves balancing speed against price certainty; a market order may fill quickly but at a less favourable price, while a limit order offers price control with no guarantee it will fill at all. Understanding these trade-offs before placing an order is worthwhile.

Matching the Tool to the Task

Order types give traders different ways to control how and when a trade is executed. Knowing which to use, and why, is a practical skill that develops with experience.

⚠ Risk Warning:CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
