Kicker pattern Definition

What Is a Kicker Pattern in Technical Analysis?

The kicker pattern is a two-candle candlestick formation that signals a sharp and sudden reversal in market direction. It occurs when the second candle opens with a gap in the opposite direction to the first candle and closes strongly in that new direction — leaving no overlap between the two candle bodies. It is considered one of the most powerful reversal signals in candlestick analysis.

Bullish Kicker vs. Bearish Kicker

Feature Bullish Kicker Bearish Kicker
First candle Bearish (red/black) candle Bullish (green/white) candle
Second candle Bullish candle gaps up at open Bearish candle gaps down at open
Signal Strong upside reversal Strong downside reversal
Where it appears At the end of a downtrend At the end of an uptrend

What Makes the Kicker Pattern So Significant?

The gap between the two candles is the defining element. A gap at open represents a sudden shift in sentiment — often triggered by a news event, earnings release, or unexpected economic data — that leaves traders on the wrong side scrambling to exit. The fact that the second candle opens at or beyond the first candle’s open, with no price overlap, signals that the prior trend has been comprehensively rejected.

How to Identify a Kicker Pattern on a Chart

Look for the following conditions:

  • Two consecutive candles of opposite colour (or direction)

  • The second candle opens with a gap away from the first candle’s open — not its close

  • The second candle closes strongly in its direction, with a substantial real body

  • The pattern ideally appears at a significant support or resistance level

Reliability and Limitations

The kicker pattern carries more weight when it appears alongside high volume, confirming that the gap was driven by genuine market participation rather than thin trading conditions. In low-liquidity markets or during extended hours, gaps occur more frequently and carry less analytical weight. Like all candlestick patterns, the kicker should be confirmed by surrounding price context — trend direction, key levels, and momentum indicators — rather than treated as a standalone entry trigger.

The Kicker Pattern in Your Analytical Toolkit

When it appears in the right context, the kicker pattern is one of the clearer signals that a trend has genuinely shifted. Recognising it accurately and understanding the conditions under which it is most reliable adds a precise and powerful tool to any technical trader’s chart-reading approach.
