Sterling weakened against the dollar in early European trade on Monday, with GBP/USD down about 0.1% near 1.3470 after the Bank of England kept Bank Rate unchanged at 3.75% on Thursday. The decision was split 6-3 and the BoE reiterated that further rises would be required if Middle East risks persist and second-round inflation effects emerge. Pricing for tightening was pared back following the meeting, with the implied probability of a September move falling from 60% to 30%, while 31bps of hikes were priced by year-end, down 11.4bps on the day.

Broader appetite for risk strengthened as oil prices fell on news of a renewed US-Iran ceasefire, and S&P 500 futures rose 0.6% to around 7,535. In technical terms, GBP/USD hovered around 1.3475 and remained above the 20-period EMA at 1.3389, with RSI at 59. Support is seen around the 20-day EMA near 1.3389, while resistance sits at the 1.3500 psychological level and, above that, the July high at 1.3558.

GBP/USD Trading Outlook Amid BOE Decision and Key Technical Levels

We suggest derivative traders closely watch the 1.3500 resistance level for GBP/USD as we enter the August trading weeks. With the Bank of England holding rates steady at 3.75% and scaling back hike expectations, the sterling is facing immediate downward pressure. Historically, August can bring thin liquidity and sudden volatility, making this 1.3470 pivot zone critical for short-term derivative positioning.

To navigate this, we recommend option traders look at buying short-term put options with a strike price near the 20-day exponential moving average of 1.3389 to hedge against a deeper pullback. This strategy is supported by the sudden drop in September rate hike expectations from 60% to 30%, which fundamentally weakens the sterling’s yield advantage. Conversely, a clean breakout and daily close above 1.3500 would trigger us to switch to call options targeting the July high of 1.3558.

Market Sentiment, Strategy, and Risk Management Approaches

The global risk-on mood, fueled by a rise in S&P 500 futures near 7,535 and falling oil prices, suggests that broader market sentiment remains supportive of riskier assets. This macro environment often caps the US Dollar’s safe-haven appeal, which might limit how far the GBP can fall. We can use bull call spreads to capture this potential upside while limiting our risk premium if the 1.3500 level holds firm.

Looking at historical data, when GBP/USD approached the 1.3500 mark in previous cycles, it acted as a major psychological barrier. Currently, the daily Relative Strength Index at 59 shows there is still room for an upward push before the pair becomes technically overbought. Therefore, we should remain nimble, utilizing stop-loss orders just below the 1.3389 support to protect our futures and options portfolios.
