Japan and US step up coordinated yen support as Katayama flags further dollar liquidity measures

Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said Japanese authorities carried out coordinated yen-buying intervention with the United States on Friday, according to Bloomberg, and said Tokyo would be prepared to conduct further foreign exchange intervention with Washington. She said the action was intended to counter what she described as excessive and disorderly moves in the yen, and added that Japan plans to use the Federal Reserve’s foreign and international repo facility in future. She also said Japan remains in close contact with counterparts at the US Treasury, while limiting comment on intervention beyond Friday’s action.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the coordinated foreign exchange operation helped curb disorderly swings in the Japanese yen, and said the Treasury would remain vigilant while keeping close communication with Japan’s Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Japan. In market trading after the remarks, the yen firmed, with USD/JPY down 0.62% on the day at 156.35. The Bank of Japan targets inflation of around 2%, adopted Quantitative and Qualitative Easing in 2013, added negative rates and 10-year yield control in 2016, then lifted rates in March 2024 as it moved away from its ultra-loose stance.

Implications For Derivative Traders After U.S.-Japan Intervention

We advise derivative traders to prepare for heightened volatility and a downward trend in USD/JPY after the joint U.S.-Japan intervention. With USD/JPY slipping to 156.35, the risk of holding long dollar positions has increased dramatically. Historically, coordinated interventions, like those in 1998 that moved the yen by over 10% in days, signal that policymakers are highly committed to defending these currency levels.

Strategies And Risk Management For Yen Moves

We recommend utilizing short-dated USD/JPY put options to profit from sudden drops while limiting overall downside risk. During similar intervention episodes in mid-2024, implied volatility for one-month yen options jumped from 8% to over 14%, significantly boosting option values. Buying these options now allows traders to capture rapid downside moves without the risk of getting stopped out in choppy, erratic markets.

For those using barrier or knock-out options, we suggest setting upper defensive barriers well above 158.50. Since Japan plans to utilize the Federal Reserve’s foreign repo facility, authorities will have instant access to massive dollar liquidity to execute sudden sell-offs. Any short-term rally back toward 157.00 is highly likely to face aggressive, coordinated resistance from central banks.

We must also recognize that interest rate differentials still fundamentally favor the dollar, meaning the yen’s recovery might be bumpy. However, fighting the combined forces of the U.S. Treasury and the Bank of Japan is historically a losing trade. We suggest focusing on short-term bearish spreads and avoiding long USD/JPY positions in the coming weeks.
