News broke on Saturday, and the market answered on Monday. That pause is starting to disappear.

Over three days at the end of September, three very different companies pushed in the same direction. Coinbase won US approval for its own clearing house, built around the USDC stablecoin and settlement that runs around the clock. Robinhood said it plans to let customers trade selected US stocks every day of the week, including weekends. In Hong Kong, HSBC gave its upcoming Hong Kong dollar stablecoin a name: RedCoin.

Each tackles a different constraint on weekend and around-the-clock finance. Together, they show trading access, clearing and digital money being rebuilt around fewer closing hours. The shift is underway. The bigger challenge is liquidity: getting enough buyers and sellers to show up on a Sunday for weekend prices to be as dependable as weekday ones.

From weekend trading to digital payments

The push towards longer market hours is taking different forms. In the US, brokers and crypto platforms extend access to trading and clearing. In Hong Kong, HSBC is building the payments infrastructure around it.

HSBC plans to launch RedCoin for person-to-person and merchant payments, with the potential to expand into wholesale corporate and institutional use cases. That fits its broader push into tokenised payments and settlement, including a separate tokenised deposit service that already offers corporate clients round-the-clock transfers.

For now, RedCoin is a payments product, not a trading one. It also enters a market dominated by the US dollar: nearly all of the roughly $315 billion stablecoin market is denominated in dollars. A Hong Kong dollar stablecoin will therefore compete on local payments first, rather than global trading.

Robinhood is extending trading access into the weekend, Coinbase is building clearing infrastructure that can run around the clock, and HSBC is developing digital money that can move beyond traditional banking hours.

In other words, the financial industry is preparing for more flexible market hours.

What a weekend trade needs

At a high level, a trade needs somewhere to execute orders, infrastructure to clear and settle it, and money for the cash leg. Clearing is the least visible, but it does the most to keep markets safe. A clearing house acts as the market’s guarantor in three ways:

It stands in the middle: It becomes the buyer to every seller and the seller to every buyer.

It covers defaults: If one side cannot pay, it absorbs the loss, which is why it collects collateral, known as margin, from both sides upfront.

It nets obligations: It offsets what each firm owes against what it is owed, so only the difference changes hands.

For decades, all three operated during business hours. Keeping one open longer does not help much if the others stay shut. A stock trade placed on a Saturday still needs a clearing house to guarantee it and a bank to move the cash. If either is closed, the trade cannot be fully guaranteed or settled until they reopen.

US stocks show the problem. The main US stock clearing house now stays open from Sunday evening to Friday evening. That covers weekday overnight trading, but Saturdays and most Sundays remain closed.

Why weekend trading matters

News does not wait for Monday. Elections, conflicts, policy shocks and company news can all break over the weekend. Until now, traders holding positions had to wait and take whatever gap appeared when the market reopened. SEC Chair Paul Atkins has made the same point, arguing that waiting for Monday’s open to adjust a position or hedge can mean missed opportunities or extra risk. Weekend trading turns that wait into a choice.

Retail demand is already there. Overnight trading was the test run. Robinhood reported in 2024 that up to a quarter of its daily volume came outside regular hours on its busiest days, and 15% to 20% on a typical day. It now supports more than 1,000 symbols overnight. Weekend trading extends a habit traders already have, especially with timezone difference.

The market infrastructure is moving too. Nasdaq won approval in April to trade 23 hours a day, and NYSE Arca has since moved to the same 23-hour model. The SEC has conditionally approved 23-hour trading on five US exchanges, with overnight sessions due to start on December 6.

Who earns overtime?

Longer hours create more trading activity, and several parts of the market can earn from it. Brokers and trading venues earn from activity, clearing providers charge for standing behind trades, and market makers earn the spread between buying and selling prices.

Coinbase, in US crypto derivatives: With its clearing house approved, it runs the broker, the exchange and the clearing layer under one roof, so it can keep more of the economics of every contract it lists. The USDC-native design may help as well. Coinbase receives a share of the interest earned on USDC reserves, including all of it on USDC held on its own platform.

Robinhood, in US retail trading: It is pricing to win active traders, charging 0.01% per perpetual futures trade through the end of 2026, so the payoff depends on volume rather than margin.

HSBC, in Hong Kong payments: RedCoin has no disclosed fee model. Its edge is distribution. PayMe alone has more than 3.3 million users, and HSBC holds one of only two stablecoin issuer licences Hong Kong has granted.

Staying open costs money too. Every extra hour needs staff, surveillance, risk systems and technology running. Margin calls are harder to meet when bank payment systems are closed, which is part of the appeal of collateral that moves around the clock, such as the USDC Coinbase plans to use.

The pieces in place

The commercial opportunity is ahead of the infrastructure in some areas. The three developments are still at different stages.

Layer

Company

Market

What changed

What’s missing

Trading access

Robinhood

US equities

Planned weekend trading in selected stocks and ETFs

Regulatory review and proven weekend liquidity

Clearing

Coinbase

US regulated derivatives

Clearing house licence (DCO) approved; Coinbase plans USDC-native 24/7 clearing

Launch timing and first contracts; margined products remain outside it

Digital money

HSBC

Hong Kong payments

Licensed Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, RedCoin

Issuance, adoption and wider distribution

The technology is increasingly in place.

The companies themselves also give traders different ways to follow the shift. COIN and HOOD track the two US platforms with the most exposure to round-the-clock trading, while HSBC provides exposure to the bank behind RedCoin. The coin has not launched and is unlikely to affect HSBC’s earnings soon. Trade these game-changing companies as CFD shares on VT Markets.

The harder part is matching demand with supply. Retail traders have shown they want longer hours, but a weekend market also needs enough buyers and sellers on the other side, including market makers and larger investors that help keep prices orderly. Without them, longer opening hours can produce a market that is open but thin.

That distinction matters because overnight trading has already shown that extended hours can work without matching the liquidity of the regular session. Weekend trading now faces the same test.

What to know before trading on a weekend

More trading hours also introduce conditions that weekday traders may be less familiar with.

Liquidity Keeps Office Hours

Extended-hours sessions already tend to have wider bid-ask spreads and thinner liquidity than the regular day, and weekend sessions are unlikely to be better at first. Large investors are sceptical. A March 2026 Coalition Greenwich study found that only 14% of buy-side equity traders support round-the-clock trading, while 60% have no interest in trading outside normal hours. If institutional investors stay away, weekend sessions will rely mostly on retail orders and whichever market makers choose to serve them, and a Saturday price set in that thinner market can be a poor guide to what a stock is worth.

Crypto, which has traded every day for over a decade, shows the pattern: being open on weekends has never meant being equally liquid on weekends. Stocks add a further challenge. When the main exchange is closed, there is no official price to anchor to, so each venue has to build its own, and prices for the same stock can drift apart across platforms.

Leverage Works Around the Clock

Weekend access also means risk can accumulate outside normal market hours. VT Markets, for example, steps leverage down as trading hours get longer. META trades at 20:1 in regular hours, 10:1 on its 24-hour weekday version (META.24H) and 5:1 on its 24/7 version (METAUSD), which includes weekends.

The knowledge gap is another concern. HSBC’s own survey found that 26% of customers wrongly believe stablecoins are government-issued, while 10% think they pay interest. Scammers are already exploiting that gap. Tokens using HSBC’s name appeared before either licensed Hong Kong issuer had issued anything.

The Rules Are Still Temporary

The CLARITY Act failed to advance in the Senate on September 15, falling 49 to 50 on a procedural vote that needed 60. The bill had already been stuck for months, held up by law enforcement concerns, political disputes and a fight over stablecoin yield. Without it, much of the US crypto framework rests on agency decisions, so the gap is less about what the rules say than how long they last. Stablecoin law is further along, but the GENIUS Act’s full regime isn’t expected to be operational until January 2027.

Rules also differ sharply by jurisdiction. Days before HSBC named RedCoin, China’s Ministry of State Security called crypto anonymity a “false proposition” and linked virtual currencies to espionage. Hong Kong, by contrast, granted its first stablecoin issuer licences in April.

Coinbase’s new licence is also limited to fully collateralised contracts, leaving leveraged trading, which makes up most derivatives volume worldwide, outside it.

Next on the weekend shift

The infrastructure for weekend trading is expanding, but participation will determine whether those extra hours become useful markets rather than simply longer opening times.

Four signals will show how quickly the gap closes:

The weekend session decision: whether regulators approve Robinhood’s 24/7 stock trading for its expected early-2027 start.

Coinbase’s first cleared contracts: which products move onto its own clearing house, and when.

RedCoin’s launch: whether usage grows beyond HSBC’s own apps.

December’s exchange launches: how much volume the longer Nasdaq and NYSE Arca sessions attract.

Weekend trading may solve one problem for traders: waiting until Monday to react. The next challenge is making sure there is enough liquidity to trade at prices that mean something.

That is where the extra hours will ultimately have to earn their place.

How to trade the weekend with VT Markets

VT Markets now offers weekend trading on selected CFDs, so traders can respond to news that breaks on a Saturday instead of waiting for Monday’s open.

Crypto market is automatically of 24/7 nature for constantly online traders, but you can also monitor price movements for the mentioned company: COIN, HOOD, and HSBC at preferred timing of choice.

Make an account today | Try a Demo | Download VT Markets APP

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Frequently Asked Questions

Can you trade stocks on weekends with VT Markets?
Yes, through selected share CFDs with a USD suffix, alongside crypto CFDs such as BTCUSD and ETHUSD. Weekend trading extends that model into a period when fewer institutional investors and market makers are active, which can mean thinner liquidity and wider spreads.

Will weekend trading have the same liquidity as weekday trading?
Not necessarily. Extended-hours markets tend to have thinner liquidity, and weekend sessions may initially rely more heavily on retail traders and participating market makers.

Why does liquidity matter for weekend trading?
A market needs enough buyers and sellers to keep prices orderly and spreads manageable. If participation is thin, weekend prices may be less reliable and trades may cost more to execute.

Why are market makers important for weekend trading?
Market makers provide continuous buy and sell quotes and help absorb orders. Without enough of them, a market can remain open while still having limited depth.

What are perpetual futures?
They are futures contracts with no expiry date, so traders can hold positions without rolling them over.
