Open position Definition

What Is an Open Position?

An open position is a trade that has been entered into the market and not yet closed. It remains “open” until the trader executes an opposing trade to exit, whether to take a profit, cut a loss, or simply close out exposure.

How an Open Position Behaves

While a position is open, its value moves in line with the underlying market, meaning unrealised profit or loss fluctuates with every price change until the position is closed. Nothing is locked in until that happens, which is why the same open position can show a profit one moment and a loss the next.

Why Tracking Open Positions Matters

Traders with multiple open positions need to monitor their combined exposure, since each one continues to carry risk independently. Keeping track of how many positions are open, and in which direction, is part of basic position management.

An Open Position Carries Ongoing Risk: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, an open position remains exposed to market movement for as long as it stays open, including overnight or over a weekend when markets may gap. Reviewing open positions regularly is a sensible habit rather than an optional one.

Knowing What’s Still in Play

An open position is simply a trade that hasn’t yet been closed, but understanding its ongoing exposure is central to managing risk. Recognising what remains open, and why, is one of the more practical habits a trader can build.

⚠ Risk Warning:CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
