US stock futures edge higher as Riyadh attack lifts oil risk ahead of CPI and bank earnings

Dow Jones futures rose 0.21% to about 52,030 in European hours on Monday, while S&P 500 futures added 0.25% to around 7,880 and Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.15% to near 31,150. The move came as markets weighed inflation worries against the risk of higher crude prices after further attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport. The airport was targeted again on Sunday after a prior strike that killed 12 people and injured more than 300, and Donald Trump was reported to be considering joining Saudi Arabia in retaliatory action against the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

US data pointed to weaker sentiment, with the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index sliding to 46.3 in October from 48.1 in September, undershooting forecasts of 47.6. Rate expectations shifted: CME FedWatch showed the probability of at least a 25 basis-point hike this month easing to 19.4% from 24.4% a week earlier, yet markets still priced an 86% chance of a December increase. Attention now turns to Q3 earnings from major banks and to September CPI on Wednesday and PPI on Thursday; last week, the S&P 500 ended Friday 46 points higher at 7811.

Energy and Inflation-Linked Trading Strategies

We advise derivative traders to position for short-term upside volatility in energy derivatives following the recent escalation in Riyadh. Historically, unexpected military disruptions near major Middle Eastern transportation hubs have triggered sudden 4% to 8% surges in crude oil prices. Buying short-dated out-of-the-money call options on oil futures provides an effective way to capture potential supply-shock rallies while capping maximum risk.

With crucial inflation reports arriving later this week, we expect significant repricing across major equity index derivatives. Over past market cycles, Consumer Price Index release days have generated average intraday index swings of over 1.2%, making volatility-expansion strategies attractive ahead of Wednesday. We should consider long straddles on equity indices to profit from sharp moves in either direction once the inflation numbers print.

Earnings, Volatility, and Broader Market Prime Movers

As third-quarter earnings season begins with major banks reporting on Tuesday and Wednesday, implied volatility in financial sector options will spike. We recommend deploying defined-risk options strategies, such as vertical spreads, to trade individual bank earnings prints without taking unhedged downside exposure. Historically, financial sector results set the baseline for broader equity market sentiment during the first week of reporting season.

While weak consumer sentiment signals underlying economic friction, the stock market rally is successfully broadening beyond technology into sectors like real estate and healthcare. We suggest maintaining long exposure on equity index futures near levels like S&P 7,880 while using trailing stop-loss orders to protect gains. However, holding some short-dated put options remains necessary, especially with traders pricing in an 86% chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike by December.
