US consumer sentiment sinks near record lows as S&P 500 defies households’ inflation angst

The University of Michigan’s final October sentiment index printed at 48, a tenth below September and the second-lowest in its 74-year history; five of the survey’s weakest readings have occurred this year, including May’s 44.8. The preliminary October figure put current conditions at 44.7, but the final reading revised this to 46.7, leaving May’s 45.8 as the low. Over the next year, households expect 4.7% inflation versus 3.4% in February. In parallel, the S&P 500 closed at a record on 6 October and is about 2% below that level, having also ended 29 May at a record, with the divergence framed by uneven stock ownership: the Fed’s distributional accounts allocate 86% of equities to the richest tenth and 2% to the poorer half.

Market History and Sentiment Dynamics

Market history cited via a bank’s long-run dataset shows that after nine sentiment troughs since the 1970s, the S&P 500 averaged a 24.1% gain over the next 12 months, compared with 4.8% after ten peaks; past troughs typically coincided with the index being 9% to 44% below its record, averaging 24%, whereas May’s gap was zero. The current mood is tied more to prices and borrowing costs than to employment: initial jobless claims were 194K, an Atlanta Fed model tracked 3.6% third-quarter growth, and S&P Global’s flash composite PMI was 57.6 versus 58.4 in September, while September payrolls rose 29K. The willingness-to-buy gauge for durables fell 18% in a month.

Sector Performance and Technical Levels

Sector moves also matter: Energy is up 51% in 2026, technology up 27%, Consumer Discretionary down 3.7%; since 29 May, the index is up 1%, Energy up 20% and Consumer Discretionary down 5%. Technical markers referenced include 7,700, 7,500 and a 200-day average near 7,300, with the next sentiment release due 6 November.
