Gold slips towards one-week low as Trump-Xi talks and Fed rate bets lift dollar, yields

Gold was trading below $4,300 near a one-week low as markets awaited talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, with attention on rare earths, technology restrictions and whether the current US-China truce is extended. Upward moves were limited by firmer expectations for tighter US monetary policy: CME FedWatch showed markets pricing a nearly 70% probability of an October rate rise. Those bets were reinforced after the S&P Global flash Composite PMI Output Index rose to 58.4 in September from 56.0 in August, marking a fourth straight monthly acceleration and the highest reading since July 2021.

Geopolitics also fed into rates and currency dynamics. At UNGA, US-Iran tensions coincided with a 3% jump in oil prices, reviving inflation concerns and supporting the case for further Fed tightening. The 10-year US Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since July 2007, while the US Dollar reached a near two-month high, keeping pressure on bullion; a break below $4,235 is flagged as a further bearish trigger. Technically, gold remained capped under the 100-day EMA, with RSI around 44.6 and negative MACD; support levels were cited at $4,227, $4,101 and $3,940, with resistance at $4,316, $4,359 and $4,405, then $4,515 and $4,693.

Derivative Trading Strategies Amid Heightened Geopolitical and Economic Uncertainty

As we navigate the final weeks of September 2026, we advise derivative traders to prepare for heightened volatility in gold (XAU/USD) as it hovers just below the $4,300 threshold. The upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping could inject sudden price swings, even though expectations for a major breakthrough remain low. We recommend using short-term option straddles to capitalize on any sudden moves triggered by headlines regarding technology restrictions or rare earth metals.

Our bearish outlook for the precious metal is reinforced by strengthening economic data, notably the S&P Global US Composite PMI climbing to 58.4 in September, its highest level since July 2021. This robust business activity has pushed market expectations for an October Federal Reserve interest rate hike to nearly 70%. Consequently, we see rising bond yields—with the 10-year Treasury yield hitting its highest level since July 2007—as a strong headwind that will keep capping gold’s upside potential.

Technical Considerations and Hedging Recommendations

We must also closely monitor the escalating geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran, which recently triggered a 3% surge in crude oil prices. This energy spike threatens to reignite inflation fears, further supporting the Fed’s hawkish stance and bolstering the US dollar to two-month highs. For derivative strategies, we suggest hedging gold long positions with crude oil futures or call options to offset these geopolitical risks.

From a technical standpoint, we should look for a clean break below the monthly swing low of $4,235 to confirm a deeper bearish trend toward the next structural support at $4,227. Until then, we expect any attempted rallies to face heavy selling pressure near the 100-day Exponential Moving Average at $4,359. We favor selling call spreads or buying put options on rallies, keeping a close eye on the Relative Strength Index which currently signals fading bullish momentum at 44.6.
