Most manual traders focus on entry signals, stop losses, and profit targets. What many overlook — until it quietly impacts their account — is what happens when they hold a position past a certain point in time.
A rollover occurs when the maturity date of a financial instrument is extended beyond its original settlement date. Rather than closing and settling the trade at expiry, the position is carried forward — or “rolled over” — into the next available period.
In practical terms, a rollover keeps your trade open without requiring you to manually close and reopen it. But it does not come without consequence. Understanding how rollovers work is essential for any manual trader holding positions overnight or across multiple sessions.
Rollovers are most commonly encountered in two scenarios:
In the forex market, all trades technically settle two business days after the transaction date. When a manual trader holds a currency position open past 5:00 PM New York time, the settlement date is automatically extended — this is the daily forex rollover.
At this point, the broker either credits or debits your account with a swap rate, also known as a rollover rate. This rate is based on the interest rate differential between the two currencies in the pair you are trading.
If the currency you are buying has a higher interest rate than the one you are selling, you may receive a rollover credit.
If the currency you are buying has a lower interest rate, you will pay a rollover debit.
For short-term intraday traders who close all positions before 5:00 PM New York time, rollovers are irrelevant. For swing traders and position traders holding trades overnight or across days, rollover costs accumulate and must be factored into the overall trade plan.
In futures trading, contracts have fixed expiry dates. When a contract approaches expiry, traders who wish to maintain their exposure must roll the position forward into the next contract period. Failing to do so results in the position closing automatically at expiry which may not align with the trader’s intended exit.
Futures rollovers can also introduce a price difference between the expiring contract and the new one, known as the roll spread. This is an additional cost to account for when managing longer-term positions in commodities, indices, or other futures-based instruments.
A rollover is not inherently good or bad — it is a mechanical process that carries real financial implications depending on how and when you trade.
For manual traders running strategies that involve holding positions beyond the daily rollover window, swap rates become a recurring expense. On high-leverage trades or positions held for extended periods, these costs can meaningfully erode profitability even on otherwise well-executed trades.
Always check the swap rate for any instrument before entering a trade you intend to hold overnight. A trade that looks attractive on a risk-to-reward basis may be less compelling once rollover costs are accounted for across several days.
Not all rollovers result in a cost. In carry trading, a strategy where traders buy a high-yielding currency and sell a low-yielding one — the daily rollover generates income. Traders who deliberately target positive swap rates can earn rollover credits that compound over time, provided the trade remains open and in their favour.
In the forex market, Wednesday is significant. Because the forex market does not settle over weekends, the rollover applied on Wednesday night accounts for three days of swap rather than one. This means Wednesday positions carry three times the usual rollover cost or credit — a detail that catches many new manual traders off guard.
Know your swap rates before you trade. Rollover rates vary by broker, instrument, and market conditions. Always review the overnight financing costs for the positions you plan to hold.
Factor rollovers into your risk-to-reward calculation. A swing trade held for five days carries five days of rollover costs. These must be included when calculating whether the trade is genuinely worthwhile.
Watch the Wednesday triple swap. If you are holding forex positions into Wednesday night, be prepared for a larger-than-usual swap debit or credit on that day.
