In finance, a return is the overall change in value of an investment over a given period, expressed as the gain or loss relative to the amount originally invested. It’s the figure that tells you, in plain terms, whether a position has moved in your favour or against it, and by how much.
The basic formula is simple:
This produces a percentage, which makes it easy to compare one investment against another, regardless of the amount of capital involved. A £1,000 position that grows to £1,100 has delivered a 10% return, the same percentage as a £10,000 position growing to £11,000.
Not all returns are measured the same way. An absolute return looks at total gain or loss over the full holding period, while an annualised return restates that figure as a yearly rate, useful for comparing investments held over different timeframes. There’s also a difference between a realised return, locked in once a position is closed, and an unrealised return, which is still just a paper figure that can change before you exit.
Knowing how to read and calculate returns helps you judge whether a strategy is working, rather than relying on a gut feeling. It also makes it easier to weigh potential reward against the capital and risk involved, and to compare results across different markets, instruments, or timeframes on a level playing field.
As a precaution, it’s worth remembering that returns can be negative as well as positive, and past returns are no indication of what will happen in future. Markets move on countless factors, many outside any trader’s control, so a return should always be viewed alongside the level of risk taken to achieve it, not in isolation.
A return is only one part of the picture. Pairing it with sound risk management, and a clear understanding of the instrument you’re trading, gives you a far more complete view than the headline percentage alone.
