GBP/JPY Holds Near 208.30 as Risk Aversion Lingers, Traders Watch 207.00 Support

by VT Markets

Sep 15, 2026

GBP/JPY was up 0.12% around 208.30, holding steady as the broader bearish bias persisted. The backdrop was weaker risk sentiment as energy prices and bond yields rose, with markets focused on the potential for inflation to reaccelerate ahead of three monetary policy decisions by major central banks.

Technically, the cross remained near monthly lows around 207.00 after Japanese authorities intervened in FX markets. A break below 207.00 would leave the November 14 swing low at 202.34 in view and then the 200.00 level. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stayed bearish but moved back above the 30 oversold threshold. On the upside, a move through the September 11 swing high at 208.92 would put 209.00 in focus, followed by 210.00.

Critical Support Levels and Bearish Strategies

We advise derivative traders to closely monitor the 207.00 support level on the GBP/JPY cross-pair as bearish pressure builds. With the pair currently steadying near 208.30, we see a crucial inflection point that will dictate the market’s direction in the coming weeks. Traders using short-term options should watch for a confirmed breakout or a clear bounce before committing major capital.

If the pair breaks below the 207.00 floor, we recommend buying put options targeting 202.34 and eventually the 200.00 psychological level. Historically, sudden drops below key supports, like the yen carry trade unwinding in mid-2024 that sent the pair down by over 10%, show how fast these moves can accelerate. This bearish outlook gains credibility as Japan’s core inflation rate remains stubborn above 2.5%, keeping pressure on the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates.

Potential For Short-Term Rebound And Bullish Option Plays

Conversely, because the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has climbed out of the oversold zone above 30, buyers might still trigger a temporary rally. If GBP/JPY manages to clear the resistance at 208.92, we anticipate a push toward the 210.00 milestone. For this upward move, we suggest deploying bull-call spreads to capitalize on the rebound while protecting against sudden downside risks.
