Australian dollar slips below 0.7200 as firmer US inflation bets lift greenback

The Australian dollar weakened against the US dollar on Thursday, dropping back under 0.7200 after earlier reaching its best level since mid-May. AUD/USD was trading around 0.7160, retreating from a recent peak near 0.7220 as the greenback strengthened. China’s reported $54bn stimulus plan for its banking and broader financial system had previously supported the currency, given Australia’s exposure to Chinese demand, and the pair had rebounded hard from its June low before this week’s reversal. Support has also come from the RBA: hawkish guidance and oil holding near $100 a barrel have led markets to price in a rate rise later this month, lifting short-dated yields.

US inflation expectations have pulled the other way. Traders are increasingly positioning for a Federal Reserve move in September after the PPI rose 5.4% year on year to August, while oil-price pressures linked to the Middle East conflict have kept inflation sticky and underpinned the dollar. On a four-hour basis, AUD/USD sat at 0.7167, below the 100-period SMA at 0.7174 and the 20-period SMA at 0.7215; the RSI near 29 points to oversold conditions. Immediate support lies at 0.7157, while resistance is seen at 0.7174 and 0.7193, then 0.7213 and 0.7215, ahead of 0.7223.

Market Volatility Driven by Central Banks and Inflation Data

As we navigate the market on September 10, 2026, the battle between a hawkish Reserve Bank of Australia and a resilient US Federal Reserve is creating heavy volatility for the Aussie dollar. With the US Producer Price Index climbing 5.4% in August and global oil prices stubbornly holding near $100 a barrel, both central banks are under pressure to raise rates later this month. To capture the sharp currency swings expected from these dual rate decisions, we recommend that derivative traders buy long straddles to profit from high volatility.

Looking closely at the technical setups, the AUD/USD pair is trading at 0.7167, sitting just above a crucial support floor at 0.7157. If the pair breaks below this 0.7157 level in the coming days, we should look to buy short-term put options to trade the downward momentum. However, because the Relative Strength Index is currently oversold at 29, we must be careful not to chase the breakout too late.

China Stimulus and Tactical Trading Approaches

On the other hand, China’s massive $54 billion financial stimulus package offers strong fundamental support for Australia’s trade-heavy economy. If the 0.7157 support holds, we can buy near-the-money call options to target a quick rebound toward the 100-period Simple Moving Average at 0.7174. This strategy allows us to benefit from a short-term bounce driven by oversold technical conditions and positive trade sentiment.

To manage our risk during this high-stakes period, we suggest using defined-risk spread strategies rather than naked options. Using bull call spreads above 0.7157 or bear put spreads below it will help us limit potential losses while keeping our upside open. Keeping our risk tight is essential as we watch the major resistance levels at 0.7215 and 0.7223 in the weeks ahead.
