EUR\/JPY moved back above 179.00 on Thursday after the ECB raised its deposit rate by 25 basis points to 2.50%, the second increase since the US-Iran war began. The decision had been fully priced in and helped stabilise a cross that had fallen from above 180.00 over the past week. At the time of writing it was up 0.40%, with the Euro ending the Yen\u2019s three-day run. Euro area inflation was 3.3% in August, with energy the main driver, while oil traded near $100 a barrel as the Middle East conflict kept pressure on energy prices.<\/p>\n\n
Focus is shifting to Japan, where expectations for a BoJ rise as soon as September, together with suspected currency support, have underpinned the Yen and pulled the cross lower. The BoJ meets on 18 September and a hike could strengthen the Yen further, whereas a hold would keep relative policy support with the ECB. In technical terms, EUR\/JPY traded at 179.38, holding above the 20-period SMA at 178.81 but still below the 100-period SMA at 183.51; the RSI recovered towards the mid-40s. Resistance stood at 179.46, while support was seen at 179.05, then 178.78 and 178.54.<\/p>\n\n
We advise derivative traders to brace for heightened volatility and consider long volatility strategies, such as straddles, ahead of the Bank of Japan\u2019s crucial September 18 meeting. With EUR\/JPY currently trading at 179.38, the market is tightly coiled after the ECB’s recent rate hike to 2.50%. Historical data shows that previous sudden Japanese currency interventions, like those in 2024 that moved the market by over 500 pips in a matter of days, can rapidly crush unhedged directional positions.<\/p>\n\n
With Brent crude oil trading near $100 a barrel due to ongoing Middle East conflicts, energy-driven inflation will likely keep the European Central Bank on a hawkish path. August\u2019s Eurozone inflation rate of 3.3% suggests that the ECB is not done tightening, which should limit deep slides for the Euro in the medium term. We believe buying short-term Euro call options on dips near the 178.50 support level offers an attractive risk-reward ratio if the BoJ decides to hold rates.<\/p>\n\n
Conversely, a confirmed BoJ rate hike next week could trigger a massive Yen rally and push EUR\/JPY well below its 20-period moving average of 178.81. To hedge against this, we recommend utilizing tight stop-losses on existing spot positions or buying out-of-the-money put options targeting a pullback toward the 175.00 level. Derivative traders must stay nimble, as any hawkish surprise from Tokyo will immediately shift the momentum back to the Yen.<\/p>\n\n
On the technical side, we are watching the immediate resistance level at 179.46. A clean breakout above this barrier could spark a run toward the 100-period moving average near 183.51. Until we get past the September 18 meeting, we suggest keeping position sizes small and focusing on defined-risk option spreads to survive the upcoming swings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
