Rate expectations remained firm, with markets pricing an 82% chance of a Bank of England hike by the 5 November meeting, according to Prime Terminal data. US data were sparse, but traders looked ahead to initial jobless claims for the week ending 18 July, as well as S&P flash PMIs and the Federal Reserve decision next week; money markets put the odds of unchanged rates at the 29 July meeting at 65%, down from 78% a day earlier, also via Prime Terminal.

Energy and geopolitics added volatility: WTI rose by more than 2.5% to $86.70, and petrol prices were up nearly 24% so far in July, still short of the $90 level seen as WTI’s June floor. On the charts, GBP/USD traded at 1.3375 and remained below the 50-, 100- and 200-day SMAs clustered at 1.3464, 1.3468 and 1.3472, plus trend resistance at 1.3476. RSI (14) was 50, while the FXS Fed Sentiment Index stood at 128.64.

Positioning For Downside In Sterling And Shifting Central Bank Expectations

We believe derivative traders should position for a potential downside move in GBP/USD by purchasing short-dated put options or using bear call spreads. The currency pair is currently facing heavy resistance below its key moving averages between 1.3464 and 1.3472. Historically, when the Pound fails to break these technical ceilings while momentum indicators sit neutral, the spot price tends to slide back toward recent lows.

With the Federal Reserve’s rate decision coming up on July 29, we should closely watch the shifting sentiment in interest rate futures. The market-implied probability of the Fed holding rates steady has quickly dropped to 65% from 78%, signaling that traders are preparing for a more active central bank. We can exploit this volatility by trading short-term interest rate futures or setting up calendar spreads to capture sudden adjustments in rate expectations.

Energy Volatility, Options Strategies, And Sterling Hedges

The sudden spike in WTI crude to $86.70 due to escalating Middle East tensions means we must prepare for a surge in energy market volatility. Implied volatility in oil options historically climbs by 15% to 25% during active military threats near major shipping lanes. To capitalize on this risk premium, we recommend buying out-of-the-money call options on crude oil or utilizing long straddles to profit from large price swings.

Even though cooler UK inflation at 2.6% gives local policymakers some breathing room, the market is still pricing in an 82% chance of a Bank of England rate hike in November. We advise hedging any long Sterling exposures with weekly put options to protect against a sudden downturn. Past energy shocks have shown that rapidly rising oil prices put heavy pressure on the UK economy, which could easily drag the Pound down if crude breaks back above the $90 mark.

Start trading now — click <a href="https://www.vtmarkets.com/en-eu/trade-now/>here to create your real VT Markets account.

[33

post-52391","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
