Quote Definition

What Is a Quote?

A quote is the current price at which a product is available for trade. Most quotes are made up of two figures: the bid price, which is what you’d receive if selling immediately, and the ask price, which is what you’d pay if buying immediately.

Understanding the Bid-Ask Spread Within a Quote

The difference between the bid and ask price within a quote is known as the spread, and it represents one of the main costs of entering and exiting a trade. Tighter spreads are generally associated with more liquid markets, while wider spreads tend to appear in less actively traded instruments or during volatile conditions.

How Quotes Update in Real Time

In actively traded markets, quotes can change many times per second as new orders enter the market and prices adjust to reflect current supply and demand. Trading platforms display this live quote stream, allowing traders to see the most current price available before placing an order.

Quotes and Market Depth

Beyond the simple bid and ask, many platforms also show market depth, which lists multiple quotes at different price levels and volumes either side of the current price. Reviewing depth alongside the headline quote can give a clearer sense of how much volume is available before the price is likely to move on to the next level.

A Quote Isn’t Always the Final Price: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, the quote you see on screen can shift in the time it takes to place an order, particularly during fast-moving markets or around major news releases, a phenomenon often referred to as slippage. The displayed quote is a reference point, not always a guaranteed execution price, especially during periods of heightened volatility.

Why Every Trade Starts With a Quote

A quote is the starting point of every transaction, condensing supply, demand, and market sentiment into two simple numbers visible on screen. Understanding what sits behind a quote, and how quickly it can move, is a fundamental part of trading any market with confidence and managing expectations around execution.

⚠ Risk Warning:CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
