Major pairs Definition

What Counts as a Major Pair

A major pair is a forex pair that includes the US dollar on one side, paired with another heavily traded global currency, such as the euro, Japanese yen, British pound, or Swiss franc. Common examples include EUR/USD, USD/JPY, GBP/USD, and USD/CHF.

These pairs are called “major” because they involve the world’s largest, most liquid economies, which means they attract the highest trading volumes of any currency pairs on the market.

Why Manual and Algorithmic Traders Favour Majors

  • Deep liquidity — high trading volume generally means it is easier to enter and exit positions at the price you expect.

  • Tighter spreads — major pairs typically carry narrower bid-ask spreads than minor or exotic pairs, which can reduce trading costs.

  • Abundant data and coverage — economic releases, central bank commentary, and news on these economies are widely reported, supporting fundamental analysis.

Pair Type Example Typical Liquidity
Major EUR/USD Very high
Minor (cross) EUR/GBP Moderate
Exotic USD/TRY Lower

Major Pairs and Trading Costs

Because of their depth of liquidity, major pairs are often quoted with some of the narrowest spreads available across forex, which can make a meaningful difference for traders who open and close positions frequently.

This is also why major pairs are commonly used in carry trade strategies and news-driven trading, where reliable execution and consistent pricing during volatile periods matter as much as the direction of the move itself.

Major Pairs Outside US Trading Hours

Liquidity in major pairs is generally strong across most of the trading day because their underlying economies sit across overlapping time zones, from Asian to European to US sessions. Even so, liquidity can thin out during quieter periods, such as late in the Asian session before London opens, which can temporarily widen spreads.

Building Major Pairs Into a Trading Plan

Major pairs are often a starting point for traders new to forex because of their liquidity and abundant data, but liquidity does not remove market risk. As a precaution, every position still carries the potential for loss and should be sized according to your own risk tolerance and strategy, not simply chosen because a pair is popular.

Risk Warning:Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
