Lot Definition

What Is a Lot in Trading and Why Does It Matter?

A lot is the standard unit used to measure the size of a trade in financial markets. In forex, one standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. Lot sizes determine how much of a currency pair, commodity, or index you are buying or selling in a single transaction — and directly affect the monetary value of each pip or point movement.

Types of Lot Sizes

Lot Type Size (Units) Pip Value (EUR/USD, approx.) Best For
Standard Lot 100,000 ~USD 10 per pip Experienced traders with larger capital
Mini Lot 10,000 ~USD 1 per pip Intermediate traders building consistency
Micro Lot 1,000 ~USD 0.10 per pip Beginners managing small account sizes
Nano Lot 100 ~USD 0.01 per pip Very small accounts or precision scaling

How Lot Size Affects Risk

The relationship between lot size and risk is direct: the larger your lot, the greater your gain or loss per pip. A trader using a standard lot on EUR/USD earns or loses approximately USD 10 for every pip the market moves. The same trade on a micro lot moves only USD 0.10 per pip. Selecting the right lot size relative to your account balance is a fundamental part of risk management.

Calculating Position Size

Most traders use a percentage-of-account rule to determine lot size. A common approach is to risk no more than 1–2% of total account balance per trade. If your account holds USD 5,000 and you risk 1%, your maximum loss per trade is USD 50. You then calculate the lot size that keeps your loss within that limit given your stop loss distance.

Lot Sizes: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, trading a lot size that is too large relative to your account balance is one of the most common causes of rapid capital depletion. Typically, investors start trading with 1 lot, but this is only appropriate if the account size supports the risk that a standard lot carries. Start smaller and scale up as your strategy and capital grow.
