Hanging Man Candlestick Definition

What Is a Hanging Man Candlestick?

A hanging man is a single-candle pattern that forms at the top of an uptrend and can warn of a potential bearish reversal. It has a small real body near the top of the range and a long lower shadow at least twice the length of the body, with little or no upper wick. Although buyers pushed price back up to close near the open, the deep intrasession sell-off shows that sellers were able to take control for the first time in a while.

How to Identify a Hanging Man on a Chart

  • A long lower shadow at least twice the size of the real body.

  • A small real body near the top of the candle’s range.

  • Minimal or no upper shadow.

  • It appears after a sustained uptrend, which gives it bearish meaning.

  • A bearish (red) close is often viewed as a slightly stronger warning.

Hanging Man Versus Hammer

The hanging man and the hammer look identical, so location is what separates them:

Feature Hanging Man Hammer
Prior trend Uptrend Downtrend
Implied signal Bearish reversal Bullish reversal
Shape Long lower wick, small body Long lower wick, small body

What the Pattern Suggests

The long lower shadow shows that sellers managed to drive price well below the open before buyers recovered the loss. After an extended rally, this shift can indicate that buying momentum is weakening and that a turn lower may be developing.

Limitations of the Hanging Man Signal

The hanging man is a warning, not a confirmation. Price can continue higher even after the pattern forms, and acting on it too early can lead to premature exits or poorly timed short positions. Most traders look for a bearish confirmation candle on the following session and check the pattern against resistance levels and momentum indicators before drawing conclusions.

Putting the Hanging Man to Work

The hanging man earns its value as part of a structured read of trend exhaustion rather than as a lone trigger. Combined with resistance, volume, and broader sentiment, it helps traders question whether an uptrend still has strength behind it. On VT Markets platforms, candlestick patterns like this can be tracked across a wide range of instruments to support more disciplined decision-making.
