WTI slips below $85 as Middle East tensions and Iran sanctions risks fuel volatility calls

WTI slipped on Monday after rising more than 5% last week, even as tensions in the Middle East and restricted shipping via the Strait of Hormuz kept geopolitical risk elevated. The contract traded around $84.37 a barrel at the time of writing, down about 2.28% on the day. The market also braced for fresh US sanctions on Iran expected later on Monday, while Tehran warned it could halt oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz and elsewhere in the Persian Gulf should Washington proceed.

On charts, upside has been capped by the 100-day SMA, even though WTI remains above the 21-day and 200-day SMAs. The prior descending trend line has flipped into resistance at $85, with the RSI near 55; meanwhile MACD stayed in positive territory, though ADX was around 19. Resistance sits around $85 and then the 100-day SMA at $85.64, while support is seen at the 21-day SMA of $81.37, followed by the 200-day SMA near $76.84 and an ascending trend line around $75, with $68.00 as a deeper horizontal support level.

Geopolitical Risks and Volatility Strategies

We advise derivative traders to prepare for heightened volatility in WTI crude over the coming weeks as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East threaten supply chains. With Tehran threatening to block the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint that carries about 20 million barrels of oil per day, the risk of a sudden price spike remains extremely high. We should closely watch how China, which currently purchases over 90% of Iran’s crude exports, reacts to the impending US sanctions.

Given these binary geopolitical risks, we recommend options traders utilize long straddles or strangles to profit from sharp price swings in either direction. This strategy protects us from a sudden market cooldown that could drop prices toward the 200-day moving average near $76.84, while still capturing the upside if a supply disruption occurs. Historical data shows that implied volatility in oil options frequently spikes by over 30% during Middle East standoffs, making early premium-buying strategies highly attractive.

Futures Trading Considerations

For futures traders, we suggest waiting for a clean breakout above the 100-day Simple Moving Average at $85.64 before committing to aggressive long positions. If WTI fails to break this level and slips, we can look to establish long positions near the 21-day SMA support at $81.37. This disciplined approach keeps our risk-to-reward ratio highly favorable while the market digests the immediate threat of new sanctions.
