WTI Rally Diverges From Futures Positioning
WTI extended its rally even as speculative appetite cooled in the week to 20 October. Net exposure fell to about 89.3K contracts, yet prices pushed towards $102.00 a barrel, leaving price action moving ahead of futures positioning and creating a clear divergence. Exposure sat at the 8th percentile and net positioning near the 8th, while a drop below 94.14 would put the rebound under pressure. In currencies, positioning turned more constructive: non-commercials cut GBP net shorts to a five-week low near 80.4K contracts as GBP/USD tested the 1.3380 area, with exposure around the 3rd percentile and net positioning near the 4th; CAD and EUR also saw price and positioning align.
Currency Market Positioning: Notable Moves and Divergences
JPY showed similar alignment, but it remained the most crowded long. Speculative exposure was at the 84th percentile and outright net positioning at the 87th, leaving the trade more sensitive to a rapid unwind. At the other end, AUD sat near zero on a net-positioning percentile basis, pointing to entrenched bearishness and the potential for a sharp move if shorts are covered.
