USDJPY slides 700 pips as yield spread narrows, with traders eyeing corrective bounce to sell

USDJPY slid more than 700 pips after completing an Elliott Wave corrective recovery, with the 08.18.2026 chart showing a three‑wave counter‑trend bounce labelled wave ((X)) ending around the 160.00–161.00 area. That rebound from the late‑July low was mapped as an (A)‑(B)‑(C) zigzag in ((W)), while 164.056 was set as the invalidation level for the downside-biased broader sequence. The setup framed a turn lower once wave ((X)) finished beneath that threshold.

Follow-through came in the 09.15.2026 chart as USDJPY broke down from 160.364 and began a five‑wave impulsive decline labelled wave (A). The move progressed through sub‑waves 1 to 5, with wave 3 driving the main leg of the sell-off. After a wave 4 pause near 157.00, wave 5 carried price to around 152.50 to complete wave (A).

Bearish Momentum and Technical Setup

Following the massive 700-pip drop down to the 152.50 level, we believe the dominant bearish momentum is firmly established. Since this impulsive five-wave decline likely completes wave (A), derivative traders should now prepare for a temporary corrective bounce, known as wave (B). We recommend using any short-term rallies back toward the 155.00 to 156.00 resistance zone to build fresh short positions.

Fundamentals and Trade Implementation

This bearish outlook is strongly supported by the narrowing interest rate differential between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. Recent market data shows the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has slid toward 3.62%, while Japan’s 10-year government bond yield remains stable near 1.0% following the Bank of Japan’s hawkish policy adjustments. This shrinking yield spread historically triggers a massive unwinding of the yen carry trade, which will keep long-term downward pressure on the currency pair.

For option traders, we suggest buying out-of-the-money put options with expiration dates set for late October or November to capture the next major wave downward. Implied volatility for USDJPY has recently hovered near 12%, making option premiums relatively attractive for buyers looking to speculate on a further drop toward the 148.00 level. Alternatively, futures traders can establish short positions on counter-trend bounces while placing tight stop-losses just above the 157.00 mark to protect capital during volatile swings.
