US initial jobless claims rose to 199K in the week to 10 October, according to the US Department of Labour, coming in slightly under the 200K estimate and above the prior week’s 198K, which was revised from 197K. The four-week moving average edged up by 0.25K to 198.50K, versus the previous week’s revised 198.25K. Continuing claims fell by 4K to 1.710M in the week to 3 October, pointing to fewer people remaining on unemployment benefits.

US Dollar Index and Currency Valuation

In markets, the dollar gave back part of the previous session’s gains, with the US Dollar Index (DXY) trading modestly lower around 102.00 after briefly dipping to multi-day lows before recovering some ground.

Labour Market Indicators and Monetary Policy

Employment data matter for currency valuation because stronger labour-market conditions can support consumer spending and growth, while a tight labour market can feed wage pressures and inflation, shaping monetary policy. Wage growth is monitored as a component of underlying inflation, and central banks’ focus varies by mandate, with the Federal Reserve (Fed) including maximum employment while the European Central Bank (ECB) targets price stability.
