Sterling slips to five-week low as Fed and Bank of England decisions loom, oil jumps

Sterling fell against the dollar, with GBP/USD probing five-week lows at 1.3464 before paring losses to trade around 1.3492; it was still down 0.23% as markets awaited policy decisions from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday and the Bank of England on Thursday. Risk sentiment was muted after a weak start to the week, while oil jumped following Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia that damaged the East-West pipeline, a route designed to bypass the Strait of Hormuz via the Red Sea.

The pair later hovered near 1.3470, extending its slide to 0.38% on the session and pressing the lower end of its monthly range as demand for the US dollar strengthened into the Fed meeting. Futures pricing, as tracked by the CME FedWatch tool, implied an 88% probability of a 25-basis-point Fed rate increase, while attention also turned to expectations for a BoE hold with a hawkish tilt and a possible 25 bp move in November; technicians cited support at 1.3450–1.3420 and resistance above 1.3550.

Preparing For Heightened Volatility In GBP/USD Markets

We should prepare for heightened volatility in the GBP/USD options and futures markets as the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England prepare to announce their rate decisions. With the exchange rate testing key support levels around 1.3450, we recommend derivative traders look closely at short-term put options to hedge against a deeper drop toward 1.3420. The surging US 10-year Treasury yield, which recently climbed back above the 4.2% mark, continues to bolster the greenback and pressure the pound.

Derivative Strategies And Rate Path Scenarios

To capitalize on this environment, we suggest implementing limited-risk strategies like bear put spreads to capture downside momentum without exposing ourselves to unlimited risk. Current market sentiment shows an 88% probability of a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike, which means any unexpected pause or hawkish surprise will trigger sharp swings. Historically, when US yields spike ahead of major central bank meetings, the pound sterling faces intense short-term selling pressure before finding a solid floor.

For those trading sterling-denominated futures, we should closely monitor the UK-US yield spread, which currently remains supportive but highly sensitive to any shift in Bank of England rhetoric. If the Bank of England delivers a hawkish hold this week, we could see a quick rebound toward the 1.3550 resistance level. Therefore, keeping a portion of our portfolios in long call options at these lower levels allows us to capture any sudden upward reversal if the UK central bank hints at a November rate hike.
