Sterling edges up as softer US PPI dents Fed hike bets, DXY slips below 100

Sterling edged higher against the dollar after softer US producer-price data tempered expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening. GBP/USD was at 1.3503, up 0.06%, while the Dollar Index (DXY) slipped 0.14% to 99.83. US PPI inflation cooled to 4.7% year on year in July from 5.5%, undershooting the 4.9% forecast, and core PPI eased to 4.2% from 4.7% in line with estimates. Separately, initial jobless claims rose to 209K for the week ending 8 August from 200K, above the 202K consensus, reinforcing a picture of a resilient but loosening labour market.

Derivatives pricing pointed to a 60% probability of a Fed hold on 16 September, alongside lingering odds of a 25-basis-point rise, according to Prime Terminal data. UK GDP expanded 0.4% quarter on quarter in Q2 2026, matching forecasts but slowing from 0.6% previously. Markets next turn to the University of Michigan consumer sentiment gauge in the US, while the UK calendar includes fresh inflation readings that may shift expectations for Bank of England (BoE) policy.

Trading Strategies Amid GBP/USD Momentum

We recommend that derivative traders position for continued upward momentum in the GBP/USD pair by utilizing bull call spreads. The recent drop in the US Producer Price Index to 4.7% has weakened the dollar, while the UK economy remains resilient with a steady 0.4% quarterly growth rate. This economic divergence suggests the British Pound has room to run as the Federal Reserve contemplates holding interest rates steady in September.

To capitalize on this trend, we should target the immediate resistance level at 1.3510, with a secondary target near the 1.3575 mark. Historically, when the US Dollar Index drops below the key 100 threshold—currently sitting at 99.83—it often triggers sustained capital flows into major European currencies. Buying short-term call options with strike prices near 1.3550 allows us to capture this potential upside while strictly limiting our upfront risk.

Risk Management and Volatility Considerations

For downside protection, we must closely monitor the strong support cluster between 1.3370 and 1.3425, where multiple long-term moving averages converge. If the GBP/USD pair falls below the critical 1.3344 level, the current bullish technical setup will be invalidated. We advise setting tight stop-loss orders on futures or purchasing cheap protective put options just below these key structural floors to safeguard trading capital.

We must also stay highly alert as upcoming UK inflation data and US consumer sentiment readings could spark sudden market volatility. With interest rate futures currently pricing in a 60% chance of a Fed pause, any surprise economic data could rapidly shift these expectations. We should consider using market-neutral volatility strategies, such as long straddles, ahead of these data releases to benefit from sudden price swings.
