PBoC Sets Weaker USD/CNY Fix Than Reuters View, Stoking Yuan Depreciation Expectations

The People’s Bank of China set Tuesday’s USD/CNY central parity at 6.7804, compared with the prior day’s fix of 6.7795, while a Reuters estimate had pointed to 6.7104.

The PBoC’s stated policy aims are price stability, including exchange-rate stability, alongside economic growth and financial reforms. It is state-owned under the People’s Republic of China, with the Chinese Communist Party Committee Secretary described as exerting key influence over management and direction; Pan Gongsheng holds both that role and the governorship. Policy tools span a seven-day Reverse Repo Rate, the Medium-term Lending Facility, foreign-exchange intervention and the Reserve Requirement Ratio, while the Loan Prime Rate serves as the benchmark interest rate shaping borrowing costs, mortgage rates and savings returns, and can also affect the Renminbi exchange rate. China has 19 private banks, including digital lenders WeBank and MYbank backed by Tencent and Ant Group, and rules allowing domestic lenders fully capitalised by private funds date to 2014.

Renminbi Policy Signals and Economic Outlook

We see the People’s Bank of China setting the USD/CNY central rate at 6.7804, which is weaker than the Reuters estimate of 6.7104. This signaling suggests that the central bank is comfortable with a gradual depreciation of the Renminbi to support economic growth. Derivative traders should prepare for increased volatility in yuan-denominated assets as the market aligns with this policy stance.

Recent data shows that China’s exports grew by a modest 4.1% year-on-year in August 2026, while domestic deflationary pressures remain a persistent challenge. To combat this, the central bank has historically used aggressive tools like the Reserve Requirement Ratio to inject cash into the banking system. We expect further monetary easing in the coming weeks, which will likely keep the Renminbi under pressure.

Trading Strategies and Market Recommendations

For derivative traders, we recommend buying USD/CNY call options to hedge against a further weakening of the Chinese currency. Using short-term futures can also help capitalize on the divergence between official daily fixes and market expectations. We should closely monitor the benchmark Loan Prime Rate for any sudden cuts that could trigger rapid shifts in currency swaps.

Additionally, the growing market share of private digital lenders like WeBank is altering how domestic liquidity is distributed. We advise traders to employ interest rate options to navigate potential fluctuations in money market rates. Protecting equity portfolios with put options on major Chinese indexes is also a highly recommended move for the near future.
