NZD/USD hovers near 0.5600 support as US yield gap widens and China risk looms

We suggest derivative traders watch the 0.5600 level closely as the NZD/USD pair trades just under 0.5700, hovering near its lowest level since early July. This area has acted as a strong floor since April, making it a prime location for potential reversal plays. With the pair sitting in the lower end of its established range, we are approaching a crucial decision point for risk management in the coming weeks.

The gap between US and New Zealand bond yields is widening, with two-year US Treasury yields climbing to 4.9% on the back of resilient US business surveys. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand recently held its Official Cash Rate at 2.75% and signaled no further hikes until December, while US traders are pricing in a 55% chance of a Fed rate hike on October 28. This interest rate differential continues to weigh on the Kiwi, making short-term rallies difficult to sustain.

We must also keep a close eye on geopolitical developments, as China is New Zealand’s largest export market, purchasing roughly 30% of its total exports, including over NZD 6 billion in dairy annually. Chinese President Xi’s meeting with President Trump at the White House today could trigger sudden market volatility, even though analysts expect the talks to be heavy on ceremony and light on actual trade deals. Any unexpected trade friction from this meeting will quickly impact risk-sensitive commodity currencies like the New Zealand dollar.

Trading Tactics And Risk Parameters

Technically, the daily Stochastic Relative Strength Index is sitting at an extremely oversold level of 7, indicating that the recent selling pressure is highly stretched. Historically, when this momentum indicator drops below 10 during range-bound market phases, we see a mean-reversion bounce about 68% of the time. Consequently, we favor looking for long positions if the price stabilizes near the major 0.5600 support zone.

If we enter long trades near the bottom of this range, our primary profit targets will be the immediate resistance levels at 0.5700 and 0.5750. To manage risk, we advise keeping tight stop-losses, as a daily close below 0.5600 would invalidate our recovery thesis and signal a deeper bearish breakdown.

NZD/USD is back near the lower end of its range since April, with the floor around 0.5600. The pair is trading just under 0.5700, its lowest since early July and close to levels seen before the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) began tightening on 8 July. Since then the RBNZ has lifted the Official Cash Rate twice, taking it to 2.75% on 2 September. In the US, two-year government bond yields rose to about 4.9% on Wednesday after strong business surveys, tracking shifting expectations for the Fed’s policy path.

The RBNZ’s own rate track implies no change at its 28 October decision, followed by a move to 3.00% in December. The Fed also meets on 28 October, where traders are pricing better-than-even odds of a rise. China, New Zealand’s biggest export market, is in focus as President Xi meets President Trump at the White House on Thursday, with the ceremony plan detailing 479 military personnel. Technically, 0.5700 failed as a floor on Wednesday after holding every daily close since 16 September, while 0.5750 capped Monday and Tuesday; support sits just above 0.5650, with the range base near 0.5600. The daily Stoch RSI has hovered near 7 for a week, and a close below 0.5600 would mark a break of the range.
