NZD/USD Holds Firm Near 0.5900 as China PMI Miss and RBNZ Hike Bets Rise

NZD/USD traded with a mild bid in Asia on Monday, hovering near 0.5890–0.5900, even as fresh Chinese factory data missed forecasts. RatingDog’s Manufacturing PMI eased to 50.9 in July from 51.7 in June, compared with a 51.5 consensus, yet the China-sensitive Kiwi showed limited reaction. Attention is also on geopolitics, after Bloomberg reported Donald Trump said a new round of US-Iran talks would begin on Monday afternoon following the cancellation of a planned strike; however, Iran’s Mehr news agency cited officials rejecting claims Tehran sought a pause and saying forces were on high alert. Traders are also awaiting the US ISM Manufacturing PMI due later Monday.

Rates pricing in New Zealand has firmed, with the swaps curve implying 60bps of hikes by year-end and 100bps of tightening over the next 12 months to 3.50%. That would place expected policy settings near the top of the RBNZ’s estimated neutral range of 2.20%–4.10%, keeping monetary policy expectations in focus alongside any swing in Middle East risk sentiment that could favour the US dollar as a safe haven.

Building Long Positions and Exploiting Kiwi Resilience

We see a strong opportunity to build long positions in the NZD/USD pair near the 0.5900 level as the Kiwi shows unusual resilience to weak Chinese economic data. Historically, the New Zealand Dollar shares a strong positive correlation of over 60% with China’s manufacturing activity, meaning the Kiwi’s refusal to drop despite China’s PMI falling to 50.9 suggests deep-seated buying pressure. Derivative traders can exploit this divergence by buying short-term call options on the NZD/USD, targeting a move back toward the 0.6050 level in the coming weeks.

Positioning for RBNZ Hawkishness and Managing Volatility

We also advise positioning for a hawkish Reserve Bank of New Zealand by trading Kiwi interest rate swaps and futures. With the local swaps curve now pricing in 60 basis points of hikes by year-end and 100 basis points over the next year to 3.50%, short-term yields are set to rise. This hawkish outlook, driven by persistent domestic inflation, makes New Zealand assets highly attractive compared to other major economies where rate cuts are being actively discussed.

At the same time, we must hedge against sudden swings in risk sentiment by using currency straddles ahead of today’s US ISM Manufacturing PMI and volatile US-Iran peace talks. A positive breakthrough in the Middle East could quickly spark a global risk-on rally, while any breakdown in talks will likely send investors rushing back to the safe-haven US Dollar. Historical data shows that sudden geopolitical spikes can push NZD/USD implied volatility up by 15% to 20% in a matter of hours, making volatility protection essential.
