India gold prices steady as central bank demand underpins outlook, traders watch INR 12,475 breakout

Gold prices in India were broadly unchanged on Monday, based on FXStreet-compiled data. The metal was priced at INR 12,475.40 per gram, compared with INR 12,463.91 on Friday, and at INR 145,510.50 per tola versus INR 145,376.60 previously. Reference prices also put gold at INR 124,753.90 for 10 grams and INR 388,037.30 per troy ounce.

FXStreet derives local gold prices by converting international levels via USD/INR and adjusting for Indian measurement units, with daily updates taken at publication time; local market quotes may vary. In the broader market, central banks remain the largest holders and added 1,136 tonnes of gold worth about $70 billion in 2022, according to the World Gold Council, marking the highest annual purchase on record. Gold typically shows an inverse correlation with the US Dollar and US Treasuries, and can also move against risk assets, while directional drivers include interest rates, XAU/USD dynamics and geopolitical or recession-related shocks.

Short-Term Strategies And Breakout Trading Opportunities

We recommend that derivative traders closely watch the current consolidation in gold prices around the INR 12,475 per gram mark for potential breakout opportunities. Given this short-term price stability, setting up range-bound option strategies like iron condors could yield steady premiums over the next two weeks. However, we must remain prepared to quickly pivot to long call options if local prices break above key resistance levels.

Central Bank Buying And Longer-Term Outlook

Our underlying bullish bias for the coming weeks is strongly backed by persistent institutional demand, with the Reserve Bank of India actively expanding its gold reserves. Recent market data reveals that the RBI added over 18 metric tons of gold to its reserves in the first half of this year, pushing its total holdings past 840 tonnes. This relentless buying by emerging market central banks provides a solid price floor, making long-term put options less attractive right now.

We also suggest monitoring the US Dollar Index and upcoming central bank commentary, as gold’s inverse relationship with the dollar remains highly active. If global interest rates begin to ease further in the third quarter of 2026, the reduced opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets will likely trigger a massive rally. Under this scenario, buying slightly out-of-the-money call options expiring in late August could offer highly favorable risk-reward ratios for retail traders.
