Gold rises as dollar slips after weak US data dents September Fed hike expectations

Gold rose nearly 0.90% on Friday as the US Dollar slid, with XAU/USD at $4,386 and still below $4,400. The Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.4% to 99.57 after softer July producer and consumer inflation, a modest rise in Initial Jobless Claims and weaker retail figures reduced expectations for tighter Federal Reserve policy. Retail Sales ended a five-month run of gains, dropping 0.6% versus forecasts for a 0.1% increase, while the Control Group slipped 0.4% after a 0.4% rise in June, US Commerce Department data showed. University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment fell from 55.2 to 51.0; one-year inflation expectations edged up from 4.2% to 4.3%, and the five-year measure held at 3.3%.

Rates pricing reflected the shift, with swaps implying a 31% chance of a September hike, down from about 55% last week, according to Prime Terminal. US 10-year Treasury yields were up 3.5 basis points to 4.684%. Technically, gold is consolidating around its 100-day SMA at $4,386, with RSI still supportive but resistance at $4,400 intact; above that sit $4,450 and the 200-day SMA at $4,504. Support levels are the day’s low at $4,311 and $4,300, then $4,202, the 50-day SMA at $4,146 and $4,100. Central banks remain the largest holders, adding 1,136 tonnes worth about $70 billion in 2022, World Gold Council data show.

Gold Market Shifts Amid Weakening US Data

We are seeing a major shift in the gold market as XAU/USD surged nearly 0.90% to trade around $4,386, driven by weakening US economic data. This sudden rally comes as retail sales fell 0.6% and consumer sentiment dropped to 51.0, signaling that the economy is cooling faster than expected. For derivative traders, this means we must prepare for heightened volatility in the coming weeks as bets on a September Federal Reserve rate hike have plummeted from 55% to just 31%.

Historically, when the 10-year Treasury yield hovers around 4.68% and rate hike expectations drop, non-yielding assets like gold experience strong upward momentum. We can also look at recent capital flows, where central banks purchased a record-breaking 1,136 tonnes of gold in a single year recently, a trend of diversification that continues to support the metal’s floor. Given the current geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, safe-haven demand remains fundamentally strong.

Technical Levels and Trading Outlook

From a technical standpoint, we recommend that derivative traders watch the critical $4,400 psychological level closely. Gold is currently consolidating around its 100-day Simple Moving Average of $4,386, and while momentum is bullish, buyers have struggled to break higher. If we see a decisive daily close above $4,400, it will open the door for options and futures traders to target the $4,450 level and the 200-day SMA at $4,504.

On the flip side, we must protect our positions against a potential short-term pullback if the price fails to clear this resistance. The immediate downside support lies at the daily low of $4,311, followed closely by the $4,300 psychological floor. A break below $4,300 could trigger a sharper liquidation toward the July low of $4,202, making tight stop-loss orders essential for risk management right now.

We must also stay nimble ahead of next week’s economic calendar, which features crucial housing data, Flash PMIs, and the ADP employment report. Any signs of further economic weakness will likely solidify the Fed’s pause, driving gold even higher. Conversely, stronger-than-expected data could revive rate hike fears and quickly reverse gold’s recent gains.
