ECB’s Vujcic signals tightening cycle as elevated diesel prices threaten eurozone inflation and rates

The European Central Bank has begun a tightening cycle, according to comments on Friday from Vice President Boris Vujcic. The ECB also sees a risk that energy prices remain higher for longer, a backdrop that could complicate the inflation outlook.

He said crude oil prices appear more likely to decline than refined products. Diesel prices, in particular, are expected to stay elevated for an extended period, a dynamic that would continue to feed through to inflation.

Monetary Policy And Market Positioning

We are seeing a renewed push toward monetary tightening as sticky energy costs threaten to push Eurozone inflation back up this autumn. While Brent crude has hovered in the stable $74 to $78 range recently, refined products like diesel are holding onto a hefty premium due to tight refining capacities. This mismatch means broader inflation figures could remain stubborn, forcing policymakers to keep interest rates elevated for longer than the market previously priced.

To position for this hawkish shift, we recommend derivative traders target short positions on three-month Euribor futures. With Eurozone core inflation still lingering above the 2% target, the market’s expectation for aggressive rate cuts through the end of 2026 is looking highly unrealistic. Buying put options on the Euribor December 2026 contract offers a defined-risk way to profit from these rising interest rate expectations over the coming weeks.

Energy Sector Strategies And Volatility Hedges

In the energy sector, we should focus on the widening gap between raw crude and refined fuels by trading the diesel crack spread. Buying European Gasoil futures while simultaneously shorting Brent crude allows us to capture the structural premium on refined products. Historical data shows that refining bottlenecks keep diesel prices elevated even when raw oil supply increases, a trend that is currently intensifying across European hubs.

Implied volatility in Eurozone interest rate options remains relatively low, creating cheap entry points for protective strategies. We suggest buying payer swaptions to hedge against sudden spikes in European bond yields over the next month. This setup protects portfolios against a sharp sell-off in fixed income if upcoming inflation data prints hotter than expected.
