Germany’s private-sector activity expanded again in October, but momentum eased. The preliminary HCOB Composite PMI slipped to 52.8 from 53.8 in September, undershooting the 53.3 consensus. Within the survey, manufacturing strengthened as the HCOB Manufacturing PMI edged up to 54.2 from 53.9, while services cooled, with the Services PMI falling to 51.7 from 52.9. Separately, EUR/USD remained under pressure after the release, last trading at 1.1195 and down about 0.2% on the day.

Germany’s scale within the Eurozone makes its growth, GDP, employment and inflation important inputs into the currency’s direction. During the 2009–12 sovereign debt crisis, it helped shape regional support mechanisms and the post-crisis Fiscal Compact framework. The country’s government debt, or Bunds, serves as a benchmark for European sovereign bonds; their yields move inversely to price. The Bundesbank, Germany’s central bank, focuses on price stability and has influenced the European Central Bank (ECB).
