USD/JPY slides to month low near 157 as risk-off boosts yen and trims yield gap

USD/JPY fell nearly 0.65% on Thursday and was set for its biggest daily drop in a month, as unease over AI-linked investment cooled global equities and drove demand for the Japanese Yen. The pair traded around 157, its lowest level since 30 September, even as the US Dollar steadied. The Dollar Index was near 101.75 after touching a three-week low of 101.45, as the Yen outperformed across currencies in a risk-off session.

Bond buying reinforced the move, pulling yields lower and narrowing the US–Japan yield gap. The 10-year US Treasury yield sat around 5.04%, down 1% on the day, while Japan’s 10-year government bond yield was near 2.86%, down 0.50%. Markets still face a wide rate differential and scrutiny of Japan’s debt load, while the Bank of Japan’s policy rate is expected to remain unchanged at 1.25% at its 29–30 October meeting after September’s 25 bps hike. In the US, the Federal Reserve is widely expected to hold rates next week, and another 25 bps move is being priced for December, with odds around 89%, alongside the 2% inflation target.

Trading Recommendations and Volatility Strategies

We suggest derivative traders prepare for heightened short-term volatility as USD/JPY hovers near 157 following its sharp 0.65% daily decline. Buying short-dated put options or downside risk-reversals on USD/JPY offers a cost-effective way to capitalize on safe-haven Yen inflows driven by tech sector jitters. Historically, during sudden risk-off market regimes, rapid unwinding of carry trades can trigger multi-figure drops in the pair within days.

Despite the recent dip, the 218 basis point gap between the US 10-year yield at 5.04% and Japan’s 10-year yield at 2.86% continues to impose a heavy negative carry on short-dollar positions. We advise against unhedged long Yen spot trades, as the high interest rate differential still heavily favors holding the Greenback over longer horizons. Instead, traders should consider bear put spreads to limit premium costs while benefiting from near-term Yen strength.

Central Bank Outlook and Cross-Asset Hedging

With the Bank of Japan meeting scheduled for October 29–30 and the Federal Reserve delivering its rate decision next week, implied volatility across front-month options is expected to rise. We recommend utilizing long volatility strategies, such as straddles or strangles, to profit from sharp price swings regardless of market direction. Given that futures markets are pricing in an 89% chance of a Fed rate hike in December, any unexpected shift in central bank tone could trigger explosive breakout moves.

We also urge traders to monitor government bond futures closely, as the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield recently fell 1% in a single session amid safety buying. Because equity pullbacks in tech are directly driving capital into the Yen, using equity index put options alongside long currency futures creates a strong cross-asset hedge. Keeping leverage lower than usual over the coming weeks will protect portfolios against unpredictable whipsaws before the end of the year.
