Gold holds below $4,200 as easing yields offset inflation risks ahead of US CPI

Gold (XAU/USD) stayed range-bound into US hours on Tuesday, supported by a decline in US Treasury yields that eased the US Dollar from recent highs. Spot gold traded near $4,183, up 0.28% on the day, while the US Dollar Index (DXY) was around 102.25 after touching 102.61 on Monday, its highest since April 2025. Demand for government bonds and short covering followed a sell-off in AI-related stocks, pulling the 10-year yield below 5.20% after last week’s 5.36 peak, the highest since 2002. Even so, gold remained capped under $4,200 as energy-led inflation risks tied to Middle East tensions kept the “higher for longer” rates narrative in play. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack favoured smaller rate moves but urged relatively quick action, putting trend inflation in the mid-to-high 2% range and indicating a slow return to the 2% target.

Energy markets remained volatile, with no breakthrough on a US-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthis sustaining supply concerns. Traders are focused on Wednesday’s US CPI release as a driver of rate pricing, after softer readings in the August PCE deflator and September NFP tempered near-term hike expectations. Technically, gold has tracked lower highs and lower lows since peaking near $4,700 in late August; RSI sat near 45 and MACD was turning slightly positive. Resistance is seen at the 100-day SMA near $4,252, then the 50-day around $4,339, with $4,450 and the 200-day near $4,527 above; support starts at $4,100, with $4,000–$3,950 below.

Volatility Outlook and Options Strategies

We suggest derivative traders prepare for heightened volatility over the coming days as the market awaits the upcoming US Consumer Price Index report. Statistically, major inflation releases trigger average price swings of 1% to 1.5% in spot gold within the first few hours of publication. With gold currently bound near $4,183, using non-directional options strategies like straddles can help capture an expected spike in volatility regardless of the directional breakout.

Macroeconomic Headwinds and Trade Recommendations

We must respect the broader macroeconomic backdrop, where benchmark 10-year Treasury yields near 5.20% present a heavy headwind for non-yielding bullion. Historical market data shows a consistent inverse correlation, where real yields remaining elevated near multidecade highs historically limits extended gold rallies. Until US yields drop significantly, we view upside moves in gold as short-term corrections within a larger cooling trend.

Given the pattern of lower highs since the late August peak near $4,700, we recommend using derivative contracts to fade rallies into overhead technical resistance. Selling short calls or entering bearish futures positions near the 100-day moving average around $4,252 offers a clear risk-to-reward setup. We recommend placing strict risk limits just above the 50-day moving average near $4,339 to guard against temporary short squeezes.

If a hotter CPI report pushes rate expectations higher, we expect a retest of key floor support at $4,100. A clean breakdown beneath this level could trigger automated selling down toward the $4,000 to $3,950 zone. To manage this downside risk, traders can buy out-of-the-money put options as a cost-effective hedge for any existing long exposure.
