China and US extend trade truce to January 2027, set agriculture and AI dialogue channels

China’s Commerce Ministry said US and Chinese officials have confirmed a two-month extension to their bilateral trade truce, shifting its expiry from 10 November to 10 January 2027. The ministry also said the two sides agreed to form an agricultural working group, with the first meeting due before the end of 2026. Alongside that, they agreed to set up a communication channel for AI incidents and to maintain dialogue on boosting China–US flights and related issues.

Beijing said it will review and approve applications from financial service institutions worldwide, including those with US capital, to operate and open branches, while calling on Washington to provide a fair, transparent and stable policy environment for Chinese financial institutions. The statement also referred to US coal imports as complementing China’s domestic market and supporting jobs in US industry. In markets, AUD/USD was down 0.08% at 0.7018. Separately, the background described the trade dispute that began in 2018, the Phase One deal signed in January 2020, and new tensions after Donald Trump returned as the 47th US President, including a 60% tariff pledge implemented on 20 January 2025.

Market Impacts And Trading Strategies

With the US-China trade truce officially extended to January 10, 2027, we expect immediate relief in trade-sensitive currencies in the coming weeks. The Australian Dollar, which currently sits at a relatively low 0.7018 against the greenback, historically rallies when trade tensions between Washington and Beijing temporarily cool down. We recommend that derivative traders buy short-term AUD/USD call options to capture a potential corrective bounce toward the 0.7200 resistance level.

The creation of a new agricultural working group and China’s renewed interest in US coal will likely spark volatility in the commodity markets. Historically, China is a vital market for American farmers, importing over $29 billion in US agricultural products during periods of stable trade. We advise commodity traders to look for entry points to go long on soybean and coal futures contracts ahead of the bilateral meetings scheduled before the end of 2026.

Financial Sector Outlook And Risk Management

China’s decision to review and approve applications from foreign financial institutions could provide a significant boost to Wall Street banks. This regulatory opening provides a rare window of optimism for US financial firms that have struggled under previous rounds of 60% tariffs. We suggest using bull call spreads on major US financial sector exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to leverage this temporary policy tailwind.

While the immediate outlook is calm, we must remember that this truce only lasts until early January 2027. Historical data shows that implied volatility typically drops by 10% to 15% during temporary ceasefires, making options relatively cheap to buy right now. We recommend that traders use this quiet period to purchase longer-dated defensive put options on the S&P 500 to protect portfolios against a sudden resumption of the tariff war in the new year.
