Heikin-Ashi Definition

What Is a Heikin-Ashi Chart?

Heikin-Ashi is a type of candlestick chart designed to minimise price noise and make trends easier to read. The name means ‘average bar’ in Japanese, which reflects how each candle is built from averaged price values rather than raw open, high, low, and close data. The result is a smoother chart where sustained trends appear as a run of candles in the same colour, often with consistent wicks.

How Heikin-Ashi Candles Are Calculated

Each Heikin-Ashi candle is derived from a blend of current and previous price data:

Value Calculation
Close Average of the current open, high, low, and close
Open Average of the previous candle’s open and close
High Highest of the current high, Heikin-Ashi open, or close
Low Lowest of the current low, Heikin-Ashi open, or close

How Traders Read the Chart

Because the candles are smoothed, Heikin-Ashi can make trends stand out more clearly than standard candlesticks. A series of strong candles with little or no lower wick can suggest a healthy uptrend, while a run of candles with little or no upper wick can point to a downtrend. Candles with small bodies and wicks on both sides often signal a pause or potential change in direction.

What Heikin-Ashi Does Not Show

The smoothing that makes Heikin-Ashi attractive also means it does not display actual market prices. The averaged values lag real price action, so the chart can be slow to reflect sharp reversals and is not suitable for pinpointing precise entry or exit prices. Traders typically use it for trend context alongside a standard price chart rather than as a sole reference.

Heikin-Ashi as a Trend Lens

Heikin-Ashi works best as a way to filter out short-term noise and focus on the underlying direction of a market. Paired with conventional candlesticks and other tools, it can help traders stay aligned with a trend while avoiding distraction from every minor fluctuation. VT Markets charting supports Heikin-Ashi alongside traditional views across a broad set of instruments.
