Head and shoulders Definition

What Is a Head and Shoulders Pattern?

Head and shoulders is a classic chart pattern widely viewed as a potential trend reversal signal. It forms with three peaks: a first peak (the left shoulder), a higher middle peak (the head), and a third peak similar in height to the first (the right shoulder). A line connecting the lows between these peaks, known as the neckline, acts as the key level traders watch for a breakdown.

How the Pattern Forms

  • Left shoulder: price rises to a peak, then pulls back.

  • Head: price rallies to a higher peak before falling again.

  • Right shoulder: price rises once more but fails to exceed the head, then declines.

  • Neckline: the support line drawn across the pullback lows.

  • A close below the neckline is often treated as confirmation of a bearish reversal.

The Inverse Head and Shoulders

The pattern also appears upside down at the bottom of a downtrend. An inverse head and shoulders has three troughs, with the middle one deepest, and a break above the neckline is read as a potential bullish reversal. The logic mirrors the standard pattern in reverse.

Estimating a Price Target

A common technique is to measure the vertical distance from the head to the neckline and project that distance from the breakout point. This gives a rough target for how far price might travel once the pattern completes, though it remains an estimate rather than a fixed outcome.

When the Pattern Fails

Not every head and shoulders leads to a reversal. Price can break the neckline and then snap back, producing a false breakout that traps traders on the wrong side. Volume that does not confirm the breakdown, or a poorly defined neckline, weakens the signal. Waiting for a decisive close beyond the neckline and using protective stops helps manage the risk of a failed pattern.

Using Head and Shoulders Effectively

The head and shoulders pattern remains one of the most recognised structures in technical analysis precisely because it captures a clear shift in market psychology. It works best when confirmed by a neckline break and supporting volume rather than anticipated too early. VT Markets charting tools let traders identify and monitor these formations across multiple markets.
