Korean won rally fades as structural inflows and BoK tightening point to USD/KRW range trading

The Korean won has risen by nearly 15% against the US dollar since late June, with the move increasingly linked to structural changes in capital flows rather than the current-account surplus alone. These shifts include higher FX hedging activity by the National Pension Service and repatriation tied to corporate ADR-related flows, alongside domestic fundamentals supported by the Bank of Korea.

The Bank of Korea expects the current-account surplus to reach a record USD450bn in 2026 and then remain elevated at USD430bn in 2027, underpinned by a semiconductor export boom. Its back-to-back rate hikes and a continued tightening bias add policy support, yet the strong run-up points to a period of consolidation. In the near term, USD/KRW is seen stabilising in a 1,330–1,380 range as authorities seek to curb further won appreciation.

Strategic Implications for Derivative Traders

Following the Korean Won’s impressive 15% rally against the US Dollar since late June, we advise derivative traders to transition from aggressive short-USD/KRW trend positions to range-bound strategies in the coming weeks. With the currency pair expected to consolidate between 1,330 and 1,380, the period of rapid gains for the Won is likely behind us. Traders should consider selling volatility or utilizing option strategies like iron condors to capitalize on this impending stabilization.

Fundamentals and Structural Factors Shaping FX Policy

Our view is supported by South Korea’s massive current account surplus, which is projected to reach a record $450 billion in 2026, heavily bolstered by the ongoing AI-driven semiconductor export boom. Recent trade data shows South Korean chip exports surged by over 40% year-on-year, cementing strong structural flows into the local currency. While these solid fundamentals and the Bank of Korea’s hawkish stance will prevent a sharp Won depreciation, local authorities are highly likely to temper any further rapid gains to protect export competitiveness.

We also point to structural shifts like the National Pension Service increasing its foreign exchange hedging, which has significantly reduced the demand for outbound dollars. Historically, when USD/KRW approaches the 1,330 level, policy-driven smoothing operations tend to trigger, making this a highly reliable floor for the currency pair. Therefore, we recommend setting up range-forward contracts or buying USD/KRW call options near the 1,330 mark to capture premium within this tight trading band.
