NZD/USD Slips as Stronger Dollar and Softer China Trade Outlook Pressure the Kiwi

Aug 7, 2026

NZD/USD was weaker, trading near 0.5870 and around 0.5900, as the US dollar advanced broadly. The US Dollar Index (DXY) was up 0.26% near 100.00, leaving the Kiwi under pressure without any domestic catalyst. Commodity price moves offered little relief: oil rose 3% to $77.30 per barrel on reports tied to potential restrictions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, while gold slipped 0.09% and silver fell 0.84% on the same headlines.

Attention turns to China’s trade data overnight and US Nonfarm Payrolls on Friday. China’s July export growth is forecast at 22.2% year on year versus 27%, with import growth seen at 27.9% versus 36% and the trade surplus expected at $107 billion compared with $125.62 billion. In the US, payrolls are forecast at 80K after June’s 57K, while average hourly earnings are seen rising 0.3% month on month. On the technicals, NZD/USD was at 0.5869, below the 20-period SMA at 0.5876 but above the 100-period SMA at 0.5835; nearby supply sits at 0.5872–0.5882, with RSI around 51. Resistance is flagged at 0.5872, 0.5876, 0.5882, then 0.5907, 0.5930 and 0.5965, while support is seen at 0.5860 and 0.5835.

Derivative Strategy Amid Weak Kiwi And Heavy Data Risks

We are closely watching the NZD/USD pair as it hovers near 0.5870, heavily pressured by a stronger US Dollar. With the pair stuck below its 20-period moving average of 0.5876, we recommend derivative traders prepare for a short-term breakout strategy. Historically, when the Kiwi faces a cooling Chinese economy alongside a resilient Greenback, downward pressure quickly intensifies.

China’s import growth is expected to slow to 27.9% from 36%, which directly threatens New Zealand’s dairy and meat-heavy export economy. Because China purchases nearly 30% of New Zealand’s total exports, we suggest buying near-term put options on the NZD/USD. Targeting a strike price just below the key 100-period support level of 0.5835 could protect portfolios from a sudden drop.

Today’s US Nonfarm Payrolls release, with expectations of 80,000 jobs, will decide the immediate path for the US Dollar Index as it hovers near 100.00. We must pay close attention to average hourly earnings, which are projected to rise by 0.3%. If wage growth comes in hotter than expected, the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates higher for longer, driving the US Dollar up and squeezing the Kiwi even further.

Commodity Moves And Energy Market Opportunities

Meanwhile, geopolitical friction in the Strait of Hormuz has pushed oil prices up 3% to $77.30 a barrel. We suggest taking long positions in crude oil futures or purchasing call options to capitalize on these escalating energy supply risks. While oil spikes normally support commodity-linked currencies, the Kiwi is currently decoupled from this trend due to local economic weakness.
