Gold climbs above $4,050 as Trump pauses Iran strike plans; investors eye Fed rates, inflation risks

Gold traded back above $4,050, with XAU/USD around $4,060 in early Asian dealing on Monday, after reports that Donald Trump had paused planned US strikes on Iran. Bloomberg reported he halted action on the basis of “rapidly” reaching a deal on Iran’s nuclear programme and a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and he reiterated on Truth Social on Saturday that the pause followed approaches from Tehran and other regional countries. Iran’s Mehr news agency, however, quoted officials rejecting the claim and saying the armed forces were on high alert, keeping geopolitical risk in view.

Markets are also weighing the policy backdrop. The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged last week in a 3.50% to 3.75% target range, while Chair Kevin Warsh restated the central bank’s focus on lowering inflation, a setting that can curb appetite for non-yielding bullion. Commerzbank said the latest flare-up helped reverse an earlier fall in crude, reviving inflation concerns; together with higher long-end US yields, it framed gold demand as protection against inflation and volatility. Separately, World Gold Council data show central banks added 1,136 tonnes of gold worth about $70 billion in 2022.

Trading Strategies Amid Heightened Volatility and Geopolitical Uncertainty

We advise derivative traders to position for high volatility in the gold market as prices stabilize near $4,060. Trump’s sudden pause on Iran strikes has created a temporary calm, but the situation remains highly unpredictable. We can utilize long straddle strategies to profit from the sharp price moves that will occur if diplomatic talks either succeed or collapse.

We should also monitor the energy markets, where Brent crude’s recent bounce is reviving inflation fears. Higher oil prices historically drive investors toward gold as a safe haven, meaning gold call options are highly attractive right now. Recent financial reports show that hedge funds have boosted their net-long gold positions by 12% over the last month, indicating strong bullish sentiment.

Balancing Bullish Sentiment With Policy Risks and Central Bank Support

However, we must balance this bullish outlook against the Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates high at 3.50% to 3.75%. Because gold pays no interest, these elevated rates create a headwind that could limit further upside in the coming weeks. To manage this risk, we recommend using bull call spreads to limit upfront premium costs while still participating in any upward trends.

We must also remember that central banks continue to provide a massive safety net for gold prices. Historical data from the World Gold Council shows that central banks bought over 1,030 tonnes of gold recently, establishing a strong price floor. For this reason, we should view any short-term price drops as prime opportunities to establish new long positions.
