USD/JPY Slides to May Lows as US and Japan Reportedly Co-ordinate Yen Support

USD/JPY slipped to about 155.45 in early Asian trade on Monday, its lowest level since 6 May, as demand for the Japanese yen picked up on reports of fresh co-ordinated action by Japan and the United States. Bloomberg said Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have been working together to support the currency to an extent not seen for decades.

Katayama said authorities carried out co-ordinated yen-buying intervention with Washington on Friday and indicated further foreign exchange action remained on the table. Bessent said the joint moves helped rein in disorderly yen swings, adding that the Treasury would remain in close contact with the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Japan. Separately, Japan’s top foreign exchange official Atsushi Mimura said joint intervention could represent the peak of the bilateral currency partnership, while Bank of Japan data cited by Reuters suggested Japan may have bought up to $58.97 billion of yen on Thursday.

Strategic Implications for Derivative Traders

We advise derivative traders to prepare for extreme volatility in USD/JPY after joint US-Japan interventions pushed the currency down to the 155.45 level. Given that Japan reportedly spent nearly $59 billion in a single day, short-term option premiums are surging. Traders should avoid unhedged directional trades and instead use defined-risk option strategies, such as bear put spreads, to ride the downward momentum.

Looking at history, joint interventions are incredibly powerful, as seen in June 1998 when coordinated US-Japan action triggered a rapid 10% drop in USD/JPY. This coordinated move by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama suggests a firm ceiling has been placed on the pair. We believe trading against this coordinated policy stance carries too much risk for retail bulls.

Tactical Approaches and Market Dynamics

In the coming weeks, we suggest buying out-of-the-money JPY call options (which profit when USD/JPY falls) to capture further intervention-driven drops. For futures traders, utilizing tight trailing stops is essential since any sudden statement from Tokyo can cause immediate, multi-hundred-pip swings. We must monitor the implied volatility skew, as demand for downside protection on USD/JPY will likely remain highly elevated.

We also need to keep a close eye on the bond market, where the spread between US 10-year Treasuries and Japanese Government Bonds still influences the long-term trend. Historically, a yield spread of over 3% keeps the yen under pressure, meaning this intervention might only buy time unless global interest rates drop. Derivative traders can use calendar spreads to trade the difference between short-term policy volatility and long-term economic realities.
